Georgetown, SCI. Good News Concerning Shoaling On Ocracoke, NC's Big Foot Slough Channel (Pamlico Sound)

In our last "SSECN Alert" we warned the cruising community about shoaling on Ocracoke, NC's primary entrance passage, Big Foot Slough Channel. Well, it wasn't 48 hours later that we received really good news about this problem, including a very Washington NCdescriptive photograph, courtesy of Captain Gregory Han. All cruisers who plan on visiting this very popular Pamlico Sound port of call will want to check out this fresh info at:

Key Lime Sailing ClubII. More Good News at AICW/Mantanzas Inlet Intersection Problem Stretch (Statute Mile 795)
One of the two worst AICW Problem Stretches along the Eastern Florida coastline lies south of St. Augustine at the intersection of the Waterway and Mantanzas Inlet. In spite of remarking some twelve months ago, more than a few vessels have still come to grief on these troubled waters.

Now, at least for awhile, those problems will be only a bad memory, though, as you will see, it will take several months to achieve this happy state of affairs. For full details, check out:

Dolphin Cove MarinaIII. Latest "Notice to Mariners" Reveals Several Navigational Concerns on Western Florida Coastline

Those of you who have been following our "SSECN Alerts" already know that for several months now our intrepid, Eastern Seaboard Editor, Captain Larry Dorminy, has been "cherry picking" the various "Local Notice to Mariners' editions, for news that affects the Cruising Community. Captain Larry has quite a job sifting through all the useless verbiage to ferret out what we all really need to now. but he is making a very fine job of it.

Charleston City MarinaIn the most recent versions of the LNTM's, Larry came across several items that will be of concern to those cruising the western waters of the Sunshine State. Among these are:

Sunken John Boat Reported Near Klosterman Bayou (Statute Mile 146)

Downtown Beaufort MarinaIV. Captain Charmaine Reports on Three Florida Keys Pilot Mooring Field Program Public Forums

They do things differently in the Florida Keys, and that's often a very good thing. Thus, instead of holding one public forum to air concerns from the cruising community over any possible anchorage restrictions associated with the Monroe County version (ALL of the Florida Keys) of the Pilot Mooring Field Program, three were held - one in Key Largo, a second in Marathon and a final in Key West. Our wonderful, special Florida Keys correspondent, Captain Charmaine Smith Ladd, has reported on all three sessions, and her story has already garnered quite a bit of comment. If anchoring in the Harbourgate MarinaFlorida Keys is any concern of yours, go to:

Also, while we are on the subject of Florida Anchoring Rights, Captain Ken DeLacy, who has been involved in the struggle for anchoring rights along the Sarasota, Florida waterfront during the past several years, has put forward an interesting proposal involving unlimited anchoring time in return for an "Anchoring Permit." We posted Ken's proposal on the Net only 24 hours ago, and already the idea has garnered quite a bit of comment, both pro and con. Read all about it at:Harborwalk Marina

Myrtle Beach Yacht ClubV. Final Regulations for Openings of Gilmerton Hwy. Bridge, AICW Statute Mile 5.8

We have put up any number of postings concerning the "temporary" opening restrictions on the Gilmerton Highway Bridge, which crosses the AICW near its northern genesis (just Osprey Marinasouth of Norfolk, VA). Well, another item from the latest "Notice to Mariners" sheds additional light on this pesky span:

Isle of Palms MarinaVI. Okeechobee Waterway All But Closed Due to Low Water Levels

Year round Florida cruisers can pretty much forget about cruising the usually useful Okeechobee Waterway this summer, at least until rainfall begins to restore normal depths in Lake Okeechobee. A recently copied series of reports from the MTOA Harbor Town Marina, Hilton Head, SCList-Serve highlight this sad situation, at:

St. Johns Yacht HarborVII. Miami Beach "Anchoring Incident" Get Nastier

In our last "Alert" we reported a "bizarre" anchoring incident in Miami Beach, as reported by "Sail" magazine writer, Captain Wally Moran." Since then, we've put up a host of indigent responses from the cruising community. Now, Captain Wally has passed along copies of correspondence between himself and the Miami Beach Chief of Police. Once again, it makes for interesting reading.

The string of messages concerning this incident has grown so long, we've started a Port Royal Landing Marinafresh series of postings, and this is where you can read the latest. Go to:
