Greetings!

The images in this issue of Constant Comment show students playing musical instruments, taking advantage of the last week of swimming, testing water from the Pond, and working across grade levels to celebrate the International Day of Peace. They are a testament to a diverse and remarkable program and campus learning environment.

One of the themes I spoke to the students about at an early all-school meeting in the amphitheater was how at Burgundy it is safe and encouraged to try new things, to develop multiple talents -- even the ones you did not know you had. Move outside of your comfort zone and take a chance! Those chances, added together, are opportunities for exploration, challenge and growth, and they are an essential piece of the Burgundy experience.

I am proud to see evidence every day of the diverse opportunities for exploration and growth that we create for our students. At Burgundy, each student can be a person of balanced, multiple intelligences: an artist, a scientist, a writer, an athlete, an actor, a person for all seasons... and a well-rounded, innovative free-thinker. Our patient, innovative and passionate teachers provide a mix of freedom, challenge and invitation for students to explore their potential and a set of personal possibilities as vast as our two campuses.

With Lower School and Middle School Curriculum Nights this past week, I hope you have gotten to know a bit better your children's new teachers and classrooms, as well as the campus. I remind you that our teachers and administrators are always happy to answer any questions that may arise through the year. We share responsibility for good communication that leads to effective collaboration. And I encourage you to continue to visit campus often -- for classroom co-ops, for Garden Work Days, for the Fall Fair or other events. The ways to keep involved in your child's education and to personalize your Burgundy experience are numerous.

Sincerely,
Jeff_Signature

Reminders
All Parent Meeting: October 9
Please plan to join other parents on Tuesday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Loft for coffee and dessert, but more importantly, an open discussion with Jeff, Kari and Jason as they discuss Lower and Middle School news and future plans at the
All Parent Meeting. Bring your questions! This meeting is a wonderful opportunity for direct communication with Burgundy's Administration. Childcare and pizza will be provided for children 4 and older, but we require registration by Tuesday, October 2, to ensure sufficient childcare providers (and pizza!). Contact BPA President Nancy Weissman (echoivus@aol.com) with questions.

Applications for New Students of Current Families Due November 15
Current families and/or faculty and staff members who would like to apply for admission for the 2013-2014 school year for any of their children who are not currently enrolled at Burgundy are encouraged to do so by November 15. Visits for these students will be scheduled in early December. Our online application may be accessed here or on our website under "Admission" in the "Applying to Burgundy" section.  Please feel free to contact Lori Adams (loria@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0464) if you have any questions or need assistance with the online application.
If 2/3 Viceroys Ruled the School...

The 2/3 Viceroys read a collection of poetry from the book If I Ran the School by Bruce Lansky. The students enjoyed the silly poems about homework and other student woes, and they asked to share their ideas of what they would do if they ruled the school. So, they pulled out their journals and wrote their own "silly ideas" before sharing them in class aloud with each other.

If I ran the School

By Sante

Homework is great. Its returned very late. You won't have to do it even if you already ate. Your math is at class. And youre taking a bath. Who want to rewind back to the past? Now its time to turn. You say that its in the garbage bin! During LA you pay no attention. So then your teacher sends you to detention.

Click here to see a PDF of more writing samples -- the first these students have written as 2/3 students.

Note: Our administrative team transcribed the students' words, opting to leave all the text exactly as the students had written them in order to authentically showcase the learning and emphasize the experiential focus of this exercise. These writing samples highlight the fun that happens in the 2/3 classrooms as well as the students' ability to think creatively and put their thoughts on paper.

Burgundy Welcomes Anne Rocha, Kindergarten Art Teacher

This week, Anne Rocha officially joined the Burgundy community as our new Kindergarten Art teacher. She will teach on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Anne brings a diverse set of skills to this position. For two years she has taught private workshops to adults and children through her home studio. Since 1985, she has worked as a graphic designer in a variety of platforms, from a meteorological equipment manufacturer in Brazil to The Gazette and The Journal Newspapers in Rockville and Alexandria, respectively, as well as local printing and publishing businesses. She is also a freelance photographer. She studied art education at Bennett University in Brazil and holds a degree in advertising design from Montgomery College.

Through Anne's sample lesson, we immediately noted that she is passionate, loving and patient with her students, yet she is also energetic and creative. Her art students shared heartfelt and moving recommendations for Anne, describing her lessons as "empowering." They report that they are free to be who they are and to express themselves through their artwork.  We will help Anne introduce herself to the Burgundy community with a future Q&A in Constant Comment (see below).

Introducing Tuan Nguyen and Adrienne Magnuson

Tuan Nguyen, Middle School Photography Elective Teacher
Q. How would you introduce yourself to the Burgundy community?
A. I'm a multi-disciplined artist who loves technology. In my spare time I enjoy being involved in the Vietnamese community by inspiring the youth as a positive role model and going on medical missions to Southeast Asia.

Q. Why did you decide to teach at Burgundy?
A. I was first attracted to Burgundy for its mission and philosophy, and Burgundy's faculty and staff has made working here for the past four years a great experience. When the photography teaching opportunity opened up, I knew it would be a perfect fit because I majored in digital arts with a foundation in traditional arts.

Q. What are you most excited about in teaching photography at Burgundy?
A. I think that Burgundy is one of the few schools that still has a dark room and the traditional film process. When you put that blank white paper into the chemical trays and watch the image appear, there's an element of magic to it.

Adrienne Magnuson, Middle School Dance Elective Teacher

Q. How would you introduce yourself to the Burgundy community?
A. I have lived in Alexandria most of my life. I am married and have two great girls. When I'm not at Burgundy I teach ballet, jazz and tap with Alexandria Dance. You can also find me coaching the West Potomac JV Dance Team. Dance has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

Q. Why did you decide to teach at Burgundy?
A. This summer, while working on the set of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, I met Cathy [Manley]. She beamed about the program here. I had to see first-hand what was going on.

Q. What are you most excited about in teaching dance at Burgundy?
A. Like a carbon footprint, students' dancing leaves an impression on the community. I'm really excited to see how all the students leave their impression of dance here at Burgundy.
Sports Success
On Monday, Burgundy's Varsity Soccer Team tied Gesher Jewish Day School's Varsity Team 2-2. The Blazers stayed strong and worked as a team throughout the game. They will take on Capitol Hill Day School this afternoon.

Burgundy's Varsity Volleyball Team played very well against a bigger and more experienced Field School team, losing 2-1 on Thursday.

Bake Sale: Sweet Ways to Help

Do you love to bake? We'd love to add your goodies to the Bake Sale at the Fall Fair. Looking for a family activity for over the weekend? Don't forget that kids love to bake (and they love to decorate too!). Many baked goods freeze well, so it's not too soon to get started. We will collect baked goods in the Admission Office and during morning carpool on October 12; or, you can drop them off at the Bake Sale by 10:00 a.m. on the morning of the Fair. Remember:

  • The Fall Fair is a NUT-FREE event. We cannot sell any baked goods containing nuts.
  • Wrap your goodies for individual sale with clear plastic wrap and decorate with ribbons, stickers and more to add "kid appeal."
  • Label and identify your sweets. People like to know what they are buying!

Medical Help on Day of Fair

Every year we ask parents who are physicians to take a turn as a doctor on call during the Fall Fair. This is a huge help to ensure that we have someone on campus ready to assist in the event of a medical emergency.

This year, we'd like to start First Aid on Call, so that we can also have parents ready to assist in case of a skinned knee or bump on the arm. We just need the hour you'd like to be on call and your cell phone number. Please email Allison Niedbala (allisonn@burgundyfarm.org) with your chosen hour between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Note: We hope you have received in your mailbox a postcard about the Fall Fair. Our mailing house made a mistake with the addresses, and while they have assured us that everyone will receive a postcard at the correct address, we also understand that each postcard will have an additional name included in the address block. We apologize for any confusion.

Please contact Allison Niedbala (allisonn@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0488) with any questions.

Buy a Book for Burgundy

Thank you to everyone who participated in Buy a Book Monday night! If you were unable to choose a book that night and would still like to participate, we have books to choose from available until the end of next week (Friday, October 5). Please come to the Library with your child to see the selection; or, you may send a check (made out to BFCDS) for $18.00 with your child, and he or she can choose a book with us.

Thanks again for supporting the Library!

Garden Work Day: Thank You!

We want to thank all of the volunteers that came out Sunday for the first Garden Work Day!  There was great enthusiasm, hard work and fun! The Garden has never looked better!

We'd like to offer special thanks to the maintenance team for sprucing up the paths in the garden -- all those wood chips keep the weeds at bay, so we can grow the good stuff.

Sincerely,
Jane Hanson and Jill Reuter
Community Garden Co-Chairs

End of Year Survey Follow Up

We extend many thanks to the parents who completed our 2011-2012 End of Year Survey. Roughly 10 percent of our families responded, which is a lower response rate than usual. So, while we cannot make assumptions regarding how the other 90 percent of our families would have responded, it's important for us to reflect on the valuable feedback provided by those families who completed the survey. Please click here for a PDF that highlights some of the common threads among the responses gathered from that 10 percent of families.
