Greetings!

Happy New Year! I hope 2012 is off to a strong start and that you'll enjoy much health and happiness through the year.

For Burgundy, January is one of the busiest times of the year, full of new developments. Our faculty and students return from winter break, bringing new energy and excitement to the second semester. We had our final open house of the year and will begin in full earnest the official admission process. Parent volunteers work with faculty and students to prepare for the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, and with the advancement office to prepare for the Auction.

We hope you'll celebrate this time of growth and renewal with us by participating in some of these events. If you'd like to participate in our Martin Luther King Day of Service, an annual event through which we will complete more than 20 projects on campus to support roughly 15 non-profit organizations, on January 16 (9:30 to 11:30 a.m.), we invite you to register you and your family here. This is a great opportunity to return to campus, reconnect with faculty and friends, and model your commitment to community service.  If you can't make it to campus from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on January 16 but would still like to support this event, please feel free to drop off non-perishable food items at Burgundy's Main Office this week. We will donate all food to ALIVE!

We also hope those of you 21 and older will mark your calendars for March 3, 2012, and plan to join us for our 30th Annual Auction. This year's theme is Connections: Celebrating the Imprints Burgundy Leaves in Our Hearts, which honors the many generations of families who have served and been served by Burgundy. In recognition of the 30th annual event, the school's primary fundraiser for financial aid, we're hopeful that record numbers of alumni, alumni parents, former faculty and staff members, and special friends will join in our celebration. Ways to support our Auction include attending (and enjoying the delicious food and fun atmosphere!), bidding on items (more information to come about our online auction, for those of you who can't attend the live event), donating items to the auction, purchasing a catalog advertisement, or making a financial contribution either to cover some of the auction expenses or go directly toward financial aid. You'll receive an email invitation in the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you'd like to get involved, please email Erin Futrowsky (erinf@burgundyfarm.org).

Last, and perhaps most important, we hope that like our students, you have begun the New Year with hope and curiosity, and the insatiable desire to pursue your passions.

Sincerely,

Jen

Steven John '97 Publishes Novel

After earning a film degree from Emerson College and pursuing a career in Los Angeles, Steven John '97 transitioned to the literary world. His first novel, Three A.M., is slated for release on March 27.

"I didn't sit down intending to write a novel," says Steven of his debut thriller. "It started as a short story, but suddenly it had grown to more than 15,000 words, and I realized I was writing something bigger...I wrote during lunch breaks and would edit at night while my wife was asleep -- it was basically a side project that took on a life of its own, then took me with it."

The story follows Thomas Vale, who lives in a city so thick with fog that no one is certain whether any life exists beyond its borders. Life is gray and hazy, as are the morals of the city's inhabitants. When Thomas meets Rebecca Ayers, he finds himself on the path to unveiling the city's history and secrets. To read more, follow Steven's novel on Facebook and buy it on Amazon.com or Barnes&Noble.com. Be on the lookout for more books from Steven, too. He just finished his second book Outrifer to the Publisher, and is working on a third novel, still untitled as of now. He also created the humor book series Wit Lits, a collection of classical works (and cartoons) in the style of the Mad Libs book series. It is available for sale now at www.WitLits.com

Emily Jonas '02 Performs in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Alumna and Burgundy Production Assistant Emily Jonas will perform the role of Loggaine in the Little Theatre of Alexandria's rendition of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee January 14 through February 4. This multi-Tony Award-winning musical comedy puts audience members in the middle of the action when a tiny fictional town comes together for one of its most anticipated events of the year. Experience the pressure, angst and joys of childhood as you follow the quirky adolescent outcasts (and some even quirkier adults) as they engage in this classic and contentious form of schoolhouse competition. Please note there is mild adult language and themes within this play, and it may not be suitable for young children. For more information, and to purchase tickets, click here.

Burgundy Alumna Shares Stage with Yo Yo Ma, Justin Bieber
Abby Drexler '11 and a select group of T.C. Williams High School choir members participated in a tribute to Yo Yo Ma during The Kennedy Center Honors, which was broadcast on CBS December 27. The President and First Lady were in attendance along with other dignitaries, as well as honorees such as Barbara Cook, Neil Diamond, Meryl Streep and Sonny Rollins. The T.C. Williams group performed for the President again when they sang back-up for Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Cee Lo Green, Victoria Justice and The Band Perry for Christmas In Washington, which aired on TNT December 16. Congratulations, Abby!
Burgundy Connections
In the last issue of The Burgundy Blaze, we invited you to answer
these ten questions to help us better understand what makes Burgundy so special. Thanks to everyone who has already filled out the survey. We've been receiving interesting and helpful information. We loved hearing one alumna or alumnus say, "I graduated in 1982 and still keep in touch with 2 classmates on a weekly/monthly basis + several others at least a few times per year." We hope many of you share similar relationships with your Burgundy friends.

Below, you can see that survey respondents have had a difficult time determining their favorite aspect of Burgundy. Does the graph below match your perceptions of Burgundy? Make sure we hear your opinions by taking a few moments to complete the survey here.

Alumni Trivia

In our last issue of The Burgundy Blaze, we asked whether any of our alumni had been featured on any television shows. Aside from Abby Drexler '11 (see above article), we didn't hear of any television-stars-in-the-making. If we somehow overlooked someone, make sure you let us know! In this issue, we're wondering...

...Who are the Santa Lucias of years gone by?

We've recently celebrated our annual Festival of Lights on campus. Our staff and faculty were reminiscing about past festivals and the history of the traditions. Can you remind us who was honored with the Santa Lucia role when you were in 8th grade? Former Santa Lucias, email Michele McCabe (michelem@burgundyfarm.org) to tell her the year you walked as Santa Lucia, and let her know what you're doing now. If we can gather a full report, we'll include it in the upcoming issue of Voices!

Keeping in Touch

No matter what paths our graduates follow, we are proud of their accomplishments. Please keep us up-to-date on your journey and let us know how we can support you. You can email our Alumni Coordinator Michele McCabe (michelem@burgundyfarm.org), post on our Facebook wall, or send a letter to:
