Save the Date:
March 3, 2012
March 3, 2012 marks Burgundy's 30th Annual Auction, and we'll be inviting our alumni to get involved in various ways. We'll include more information in future issues of The Burgundy Blaze, but for now, make sure you save the date!

Greetings!

It was a pleasure to connect with so many of you at the annual Fall Fair last month. For decades, the Fair has provided a seasonal opportunity for alumni and former faculty to reunite and catch up, all while benefiting financial aid for another generation of students to reap the benefits of a Burgundy education.

We love seeing familiar faces revisiting the campus and sharing it with their growing families. We're honored when we hear how some of you travel an incredible distance to spend your day at Burgundy. For instance, Njeri Summey '09, traveled from her high school in Colorado to visit with friends on campus; and former teacher Rosemary Stokes has traveled roughly 30 years in a row from her home in California to share her jewelry and catch up with former colleagues and students.

Many of you who live closer to campus still make the Fair a priority. Dave Evans served his delicious chili for the 22nd year in a row, forgoing parents weekend with his youngest daughter, a freshman in college. Vini Schoene came out from the Cove to sell her delicious pesto again, donating all profits to financial aid. Judy and Amanda Kane were on campus with Rosie, sharing the book they wrote together, Little Dog on the Prairie: Rosie's Journey through Laura's Land. The book explores the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the culture of prairie life through the eyes of a bichon, and it was inspired by the blog Amanda created with her 1st Grade students when she was teaching at Burgundy.

We hope the Fall Fair continues to provide various ways to reconnect with classmates and campus, and we extend an early invitation you to participate in next year's Fair. We'll confirm the date in the next few months, but email Erin Futrowsky at erinf@burgundyfarm.org to let us know if you would like to take the stage as a performer, promote your books or crafts at Artisan Mart, or propose another way to get involved. Of course, if you would rather attend as a visitor and nothing more, we would be happy to let you fulfill that critical role as well!

Sincerely,

Jen

Alumna Competes on The Sing-Off

Integriti Reeves '02 and her acapella jazz ensemble Afro-Blue is currently competing on on NBC's The Sing-Off. She shared the news on our Facebook wall, where she wrote:

Some of my fondest memories are Burgundy Farm Country Day School! It was at Burgundy that I first received encouragement to pursue my dreams of becoming a musician! Since my days at Burgundy I've been blessed to earn degrees from The Duke Ellington School of the Arts [and] The Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University. Currently I am doing my graduate work at Howard University...If not for the love and support of my Burgundy Farm family I might have never believed in myself enough to chase my dreams! Thank you all so much!

Make sure you tune in Monday nights at 8 p.m. and vote for Integriti!

Burgundy Connections
We are so proud of our alumni, and we're proud that Burgundy's unique campus and progressive curriculum continues to attract strong students and fascinating families from diverse backgrounds. Many prospective families, as well as parents of enrolled students, aren't intimately familiar with a progressive approach to education as it is not an approach that the majority of them have grown up with and experienced first-hand. As a result, they may ask why we do things the way we do. The simplest response is "because it works." We can cite research and statistics, but the best evidence of our success is your success. Listening to stories about your experiences after leaving Burgundy can also help us evaluate our approach and ensure we're providing the best resources we can to future generations. Please help us better understand what makes Burgundy so special by briefly answering these ten questions.

Alumni Trivia

Burgundy has such a long history of interesting and inspiring students, faculty and staff, it can be hard to keep up with the excitement. So, in each issue of The Burgundy Blaze, we'll be asking our alumni to help gather and remember interesting information. In fact, Liz Savage asked on our Facebook wall whether any Burgundy alumni have competed on Jeopardy. Here in the Advancement Office, we weren't sure. That question, combined with Integriti's success on The Sing-Off, led us to wonder...

On what television shows have our alumni been featured?

Do we have a Jeopardy contestant among us? A Top Chef? A Golden Girl!? Tell us about your brush with fame by emailing Michele McCabe at michelem@burgundyfarm.org or posting on our Facebook wall.

Seventh Grade Presents War at Home
Burgundy's seventh-graders are hard at work on the fall play, War at Home. They are excited to be grappling with this challenging material. The play was written by professional playwrights Nicole Quinn and Nina Shengold, who attended a peace ceremony at Rondout Valley High School (NY) in the days following September 11 and were so moved by the students' eloquence they decided to create a theatre piece from their words and experiences. Rondout Valley High School's Drama and Diversity Clubs workshopped the play, practicing and developing it to incorporate characters with different voices and points of view. All royalties sent to the writers for productions of this play are donated to charities.

We hope alumni and alumni parents can attend a performance of War at Home in the Loft on November 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Voices Follow Up

By now, we hope you have received your copy of our annual school magazine Voices (if not, please make sure to email Michele McCabe at michelem@burgundyfarm.org, so she can mail you a copy right away). In this issue, you'll see our 2007 graduates have been accepted to outstanding colleges, such as Virginia Tech, Penn State and Duke University. As you read the alumni profiles and the community updates, you'll see some of our older graduates are pursuing advanced degrees at prestigious schools like New York University and University of Chicago, as well as Harvard's Law School and Business School. Some are becoming internationally-respected artists and Juilliard-trained musicians. We even have a 2002 graduate competing on NBC's The Sing-Off this year and giving partial credit for her success to Burgundy (see article above). While Harvard, Juilliard, law school or reality television may not be the goal, we know that when young people are encouraged to follow their passions, delve deeply into their interests and develop their talents, remarkable things can happen...No matter what paths our graduates follow, we are proud of their accomplishments. Please keep us up-to-date on your journey and let us know how we can support you. You can email our Alumni Coordinator Michele McCabe (michelem@burgundyfarm.org), post on our Facebook wall, or send a letter to:
