Riding your bike around Hilton Head Island and Bluffton is not only athletically rewarding, but it also allows you to see our area's beautiful surroundings up close.

I drove over the Hilton Head bridge to meet a friend in Bluffton at Heritage Lakes which is a very nice neighborhood filled with lakes and ponds along with comfortable family homes.

We rode out of Heritage Lakes and turned left onto Hwy 278 heading west.  We passed the luxurious gated community of Colleton River Plantation which offers outstanding homes surrounded by massive views of the Colleton River and also views of their world-class golf courses.

We turned left and made our way to Hwy 46 which runs parallel to Hwy 278.  This area of Bluffton is considered "Old Town" and the atmosphere of this area brings you back to the old days of walking to the May River along Calhoun Street.

While on Hwy 46 we passed The Promenade which is a brand new residential/commercial development with quaint shops and eateries as well as top-level residential condos above.  This area will truly be the official town center of Bluffton once it is completed.

Traveling down Hwy 46 we turned into Bluffton Park which is a newer community of southern-style homes at very reasonable prices.  In fact, my good buddy Mike and his family live at Bluffton Park.

We continued our bike ride at a steady pace of 17 miles per hour going west on Hwy 46.  Along the way we passed over the Rose Dhu Creek and the Stoney Creek which offers amazing marsh and wetland views with lush tropical foliage and typical South Carolina Lowcountry wildlife.  We passed the equestrian community of Rose Dhu Creek Plantation as well as the large and stately homes on Old Miller Road.

We turned left into the entrance to world-famous Palmetto Bluff which many feel is "heaven on earth".

Situated in the picturesque South Carolina Lowcountry, along the beautiful May River, Palmetto Bluff offers a world-class golf resort at the centerpiece of an exclusive 22,000-acre riverfront community and nature preserve.

This most peaceful retreat pampers you with luxurious resort accommodations, distinctive cuisine, world-class golf, and authentic southern charm.

Palmetto Bluff was our halfway point, so after looking out over the May River and the massive Live Oaks draped with Spanish Moss, we headed back to Heritage Lakes.

A total of 32 miles today...and fantastic scenery along the way!

When you come back to Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry, make sure to pack your bike!
