News around the School
5th Graders Host Greek Olympics
It was a week of rainy weather in the New York metropolitan area. But Zeus, the father of the gods in Greek mythology, let the sun shine forth as the day progressed for the annual Waldorf School Greek Olympics! Our fifth graders hosted their own version of the Greek Olympics for their friends from the Rudolf Steiner School in Manhattan and the Brooklyn Waldorf School. Click here to read more.

During the month of April, 19 instrumental and vocal students at the Waldorf School of Garden City took part in a "Practice-a-Thon." On May 8th, Waldorf's 7th through 12th grade students were fortunate to hear the inspiring words of Marc Elliot. Where are they now? What are they up to?
A class teacher at the Waldorf School of Garden City from 1957-1970 and again from 1979 to 1988 (for the classes of 1963, 1967, 1975, 1990, 1991 and 1996), Gerhard Bedding writes and tells us: "I'm doing fairly well at age 83. I recently completed a 5K walk in Keene as #53 of 107 participants of all ages: 16 min/mile. My wife Barbara has Alzheimer's and is now in a nursing home. This is my 25th year in the Monadnock region! After retirement, I helped at Camp Glen Brook from 1989 to 1991; found jobs for handicapped people in Keene; tutored at the Monadnock Waldorf School from 1991 to 1998; worked as a Hospice volunteer from 1995 to 2000; and have been an activist in many areas from 1996 to the present! I am deeply concerned about the future of our country: truth and justice needed in many areas! Warm greetings to you all!"
A former professional dancer, Danielle Colding '94 is now an interior designer in New York and is a contestant on season seven of HGTV Design Star. After Danielle earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Stanford University and an associate's degree in interior design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise in Los Angeles, Danielle opened her own design firm Danielle Colding Design. As a self-described problem solver, Danielle believes she uses her open, friendly and quirky personality to connect with her clients. She characterizes her design style as global chic, classic modern and edited traditional. To vote for Danielle as your favorite designer, click here.
Waldorf's Alumni and Development Office was happy to welcome-back Karen Jo (Kaufman) Dolamore '74 and her mother Irene Kaufman on June 5th, who were visiting the area from Colorado. A veterinarian, Karen said, "It is so nice to see that the School is still here and doing well! Back in the 1960s, I was a student from Nursery to 6th grade and I have many fond memories." Her mom, Irene, remarked, "When I sent my girls to the School, tuition was $600. I learned of Waldorf when I lived in Germany." Karen would love to reconnect with her friends and classmates and can be reached at kjdolamore@gmail.com.
Kieran Kerekes '07 recently finished acting in a movie, a dark comedy, called "Admission," that stars Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Lily Tomlin and Wallace Shawn. Kieran played a high school student - "and not just any ordinary high school student, I played a high school student who goes to a 'progressive school on a farm!'
Kieran writes, "The set looked very similar to walking around Waldorf and Camp Glen Brook, with its farm setting as well as some top notch drawings, paintings and overall look and feel. I was amazed, yet not quite surprised, that my first professional movie role would be in a place where I had already spent the better portion of my formative years. There was even a wood chopping scene in the movie!"
Kieran also recently performed with his A Cappella group "Ten & Change" for the Make Music New York (MMNY) Music Festival - a day of free concerts all over New York City. The group performed outside on the steps of the New York Public Library in Spanish Harlem. "It was a special experience and performance and we all had a marvelous time! I'm excited to perform with them again very soon!"

It's graduation season.
Congratulations to India Rose Kusher '08 who just graduated from Goucher College! India was the student speaker at the Goucher College Baccalaureate ceremony on Thursday, May 17th. As part of the Commencement celebration, the Baccalaureate ceremony is an event for all graduating seniors, their families, and friends.
Jesse Kane '05 is playing lacrosse for Team Israel in the 2012 European Lacrosse Championships in Amsterdam! In 2010, Jesse moved from his hometown of Roslyn, New York, to Israel in pursuit of a medical degree at the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. Click here to read more.

Show us your Waldorf pride!
What's a "bumbershoot"?
(L-R) Mary Catelli '10, India Rose Kushner '08 and Kristi Visser '08 stopped by the School on a drizzly June 1st to see some of their friends and former teachers. Upon noticing a stack of Waldorf umbrellas in the Alumni and Development Office, Kristi (who recently graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington) informed us that in the Pacific Northwest a "bumbershoot" is a colloquial term for "umbrella." Here are the three proud Waldorf alumnae smiling under their Waldorf "bumbershoot."
Over the years, the Waldorf School of Garden City has sent 1000's of t-shirts, sweat shirts, tote bags, umbrellas, bibs, and other spirit wear out into the world, and we want to see its "wear and tear"! We're hosting a "Show us your Waldorf Pride" photo contest. It's quite simple, just take a picture of yourself wearing your Waldorf gear while ...- at a Waldorf (or Camp Glen Brook) event

Be creative! Click here to send-in your picture and a caption describing where you are or what you are doing. We'll post your photograph in the next Waldorf eUpdate. A submitted photograph has a chance to win another great gift from the Waldorf School of Garden City!
