Dear Alumni, Alumni Parents and Friends:
February has been an especially snowy-month for the Waldorf School. Two days before the winter recess, the region got buried under two feet of snow and students enjoyed two consecutive snow-days. This past Friday, another storm brought over 12" of snow to Long Island giving students another reason to sleep-in and enjoy a three-day-weekend.
We hope you enjoy reading the following stories, updates, and events in this issue of The Waldorf eUpdate! |
Reaching for the Stars:
Gala Celebration Set for Friday, May 14th
Every three years, the Waldorf School of Garden City hosts a special Gala celebration. This upcoming May, on the evening of Friday the 14th, 400 guests will gather at the Milleridge Cottage in Jericho, New York, for this community event. The evening will honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the School and beyond. The theme for this year's gala, "Reaching for the Stars," embraces our school-logo and reflects the ideals of our School. Proceeds from the event will benefit both School operations and replacement of windows in the pre-school.
"Our Gala is a tribute to the many people who have made important contributions to the Waldorf School," said Trustee and Gala Dinner Co-Chair Scott A. Williams '85. Joining Mr. Williams as co-chairs are Stephen '83 and Sophia '85 Pisano as well as Honorary Co-Chairs Jeffrey and Janet Kane. "It is an opportunity to honor our School's heritage and to celebrate the spirit of our entire School community," said Mr. Williams.
A dedicated group of volunteers are busy collecting sponsorships, silent auction items, and journal ads, as well as setting the evening's decor. We are actively approaching local businesses and individuals from the community for sponsorships, journal ads, support, or goods/services for the silent auction. Donations of artwork, sporting, or cultural event tickets are wonderful items for our auction. (Those of you who are artisans, please consider donating your works for the silent auction!) To find out how you might donate these items, and for more information, contact Marjorie P. Jean-Paul at (516) 742-3434 ext. 124 or via email at mjeanpaul@waldorfgarden.org. |
All School Open House You - our alumni families - are among the best resource we have in bringing new families into our school community. In our outreach efforts, we find again and again that word-of-mouth is the best method for attracting families and students to the Waldorf School of Garden City.
Is there a neighbor, a friend or a relative who might be interested in the Waldorf School? Please feel free to inform them about our upcoming All School Open House on Saturday, March 13th from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. Visitors can meet our teachers, tour our school and see student work on display. This is a wonderful chance to take an in-depth look at our school and our curriculum.
With over 900 graduates, imagine the positive impact if every alum joins our ongoing outreach efforts. We appreciate your continued support and commitment to the Waldorf School of Garden City!

Boys Varsity Basketball Team Comes Up Short in 2010 IPPSAL Championship
There was a heightened sense of excitement around the School this past Tuesday for the IPPSAL Division I Championship Game against Portledge. Chosen as a "neutral site" for the final IPPSAL game of the 2009-2010 season; the gym at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Glen Cove was packed to the rafters with students, parents, alumni, and other fans from the Waldorf School of Garden City. Despite a valiant effort, the Boys Varsity Basketball Team from Waldorf lost a close game by a score of 55-53. Click here to read more and to see the pictures. Also, click here to view video footage of the game's highlights on the MSG Varsity Network.

Monthly Trivia
January's Trivia Question:
"Green Grow the Rushes Ho" is a popular folk song that was first printed in English County Songs: Words and Music by Lucy Etheldred Broadwood and J. A. Fuller-Maitland. It has been sung by hundreds of alumni and families at numerous assemblies in Garden City and around the fire-pit at Camp Glen Brook for years and years. (A few alums might remember singing this song "as a race" against the piano accompaniment, which was always graciously performed by Mrs. Resnick.) The first verse includes a line for the number one; the second verse includes a line for two and then the line for one; and so on. There are twelve verses in all.
So, for the month of January (and without looking it up on Google! Remember, we're all on our honor here!), who can answer this question: "What is your one Ho?"
Congratulations to Christian Jurak '87, the winner of the January trivia question, for his answer, "One is one and all alone and ever more shall be so!" Writes Christian, "For some reason, this is one of my favorite songs to sing while doing physical therapy with the kids I work with...who knew?!?"
Thank you to all who responded. We received correct responses from:
Lynne Abraham-Yadlin '73
Sara Dorchak '02
Penelope Grover '71
Liz Hays Steere '77 Krista Helmke Palmer '77 Alena Jones '09
Christian Jurak '87
Ruth Karter (Alumni Parent of Michael '75, Philip '73, and Linda '78) Rachel Lindsay '10, who wrote, "I remember Mr. Rose being the instigator of the race, with Mrs. Resnick of course."
Stephanie C. Mason '06 Linda Mejias '97 Jessi Nunes '83
Joan Rawlings Italiano '70 Tamara Ruppart '96 Richard J. Schuhmann '77 Betty Shave '73 Kristin Sievert '07 Wendy Walmsley '71
Answer the February question for your chance to win a $25 Barnes and Noble Gift Certificate:
What are your two, three, four, five, and six Ho?
Good luck! | |
