A DRINK THAT SPANS TIME
Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty. John 4: 15
Just as my body needs food and water daily, my soul also craves fresh supply. Every day I look for expressions of love, physical affection, and affirming comments. Yesterday's nourishment may be memorable, even precious when rehearsed, but sooner or later my heart looks for a fresh supply. The power of today's manna cannot be duplicated with a memory.
Unwrapping the gift of scripture is like discovering a love letter with my name on it. The tattered parchments quench my thirst. Each message is pregnant with meaning, no matter who penned it on God's behalf. I share some of my favorites.
- For whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye. Zechariah 2: 8
- "I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people." Isaiah 42: 6
- "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands." Isaiah 49: 15-16
Although we might have read these words long ago in the delirium of the long hours of toil, we might have never stopped to consider that they were authored for us. When we read them in the context of relationship, not biblical history, it makes all the difference in the world. Perhaps we'll be stirred so deeply that we'll choke back tears.
My relationship with you, Jesus, quenches my thirst. I live with a full heart instead of an aching one. Your grateful child, Amen
