VOID OF THIRST
But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. John 4:14
Jesus is thirsty, and uses this as a springboard to highlight a spiritual truth. The Samaritan woman believes Jesus is a stranger but He knows her and perceives her spiritual thirst. He is also skillful in conversation. He knows how to turn a phrase and draw her into a deeper conversation from something as mundane as thirst. He can birth a succulent metaphor from something so commonplace.
He tells her something so simple. "Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again." She knows that! This is why she fetches water daily. Last night's drink doesn't satisfy. What is the point here? Jesus then tells her about a drink that lasts forever.
Just as my body needs water every day, my soul craves fresh sustenance. Every day I look for love. Yesterday's morsels may be memorable, but sooner or later my heart needs a new supply. Jesus knows that this world cannot be relied upon to give us our daily, spiritual bread. He loves us too much to put us in a tortuous predicament. He deposited His Spirit inside us, from Whom we can draw what we need, when we need it.
Living water is plentiful though circumstances are bleak. Spiritual truths are profound though interactions with others are often shallow. His love is unconditional though many look to me for what I contribute, rather than what they can give.
Christianity is a sensual religion. Once aware of our needs, we're offered a means by which we can live internally satisfied. Our thirst need never cripple us again, causing us to drink from undependable sources. We can dip our cup, and taste of Him who empowers us to live eternally satisfied.
God, I look to You for what I need. Quench my thirst. Amen
