THINKING WE KNOW
The Jews then said to Him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?" (Jesus had just turned over the tables in the temple court.) Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." John 2:18-19
Jesus speaks on one level; people around Him speak on another. The Jews want an explanation for the anger Jesus displayed when He turned over the money changer's tables. Jesus' explanation spoke of the temple, but not the one they were standing in, although the Jews did not know that. Jesus spoke prophetically of the day when the temple would not be made of bricks and stones, but would be in the person of Christ Himself.
There was definitely a communication problem. The Jews thought they understood His messages but they weren't even in the vicinity of understanding them. His meanings were multi-layered, prophetic, even allegorical.
It's easy to think that, because I know certain bible stories well, that I fully understand what they mean and don't need to review them. I am the loser if I make such presumptions. The truth is, I could probably read and re-read the same scripture for a full year and still have more mysteries to explore within the text. There is no bottom to the depths of the mysteries of Christ.
For anyone who is hungry and thirsty, the holy Word of God never disappoints. It is rich food for babes and even richer for seasoned students and lovers of the Word.
Open my eyes. I come to You daily as one who is poor in spirit. I need Your Spirit to open my heart to Your beautiful truths. In Jesus' name, Amen
