Water Hands
..from Christine Wyrtzen
ONE DAY HE'LL FILL IN THE GAPS

After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother, and His brothers, and His disciples; and there they stayed a few days.  John 2:12

Not only am I taken with what the Bible does say about Jesus, I have a longing to know everything the scriptures omitted.  John 21:25 reveals that Jesus did so much more than was written down.  And, if the events were recorded, there wouldn't be enough books to contain them.  The library that never was.
After Jesus did his first miracle, changing the water to wine, he left Cana with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples and went to Capernaum.  This was a 25 mile walk, and mostly downhill.  Perhaps the easy walking afforded energy for conversation.  I wonder what they talked about.  They had all seen His glory for the first time.  Family takes it in differently than disciples and friends though.  I would imagine that family would be quiet, trying to take in the shocking revelation of a person they thought they knew.  Since his brothers didn't become believers for many more years, perhaps their reaction was uneasiness, the first vestiges of intimidation.  Where the ground was once level, now Jesus was in the spotlight for greatness.  This would not bode well among siblings.
How did the disciples react to the event of the miracle?  Perhaps they only talked amongst themselves on the long walk because awe and wonder wasn't a welcome dynamic among His family.  At this point, they had all chosen to follow Him but had not seen the miraculous.  They had only perceived his divinity in their spirit.   We won't know what really happened until glory when the mysteries of his time on earth are fully revealed.
If you ache for more of Jesus' story, not because you are a voyeur but because everything about Him brings life to your soul, then this longing will bear much fruit.  I believe this is the reason we read the Bible for quality, not quantity.  Taking our time lets us get lost in the cracks between stories, to wonder, to meditate and voice our questions in prayer.  It brings characters to life in way that is critical for growth.  No longer are names in stories recited by rote.  As with any of our stories, there is always more than what is spoken.
Can you name a life-defining moment?  "The day my mother died."  "The day I found out I was adopted."  "The day I was accepted into the college of my dreams."  All these and more are spoken as moments that changed our life forever.  For the disciples and for Jesus' family, the first miracle might have been a life changing moment for them.  The next day, perhaps they walked in a daze, trying to digest the happenings at, what appeared to be, an ordinary wedding.
May Jesus enter each of our worlds today and leave us stunned.  Oh, for more glimpses of His glory.

One day, Jesus, I will walk with You in heaven and You will tell me about that day and many others.  Heaven will be full of such memories and I am preparing my heart to experience You there.  Amen
