 December 2011
Dear Friends,

This time of the year truly is cheering, even if it sometimes feels overwhelming.  Maybe that's because (as studies have shown) spending money on others promotes our own happiness.  Or maybe it's that this is the time of year when we gather together with our friends and families, relying on that sense of community to get us through the shortest days of the year.

So far as the overwhelming parts of this season, we'd like to help:  Here at Phoenix, we have something for everyone, and we love helping you find just the right gift for even the most challenging people on your list.  You'll find lots of possibilities below, and we're always happy to make suggestions in person.

When you choose to shop at Phoenix, you're not just supporting a local bookstore:  You're also supporting local authors, artists, artisans, bakeries, booksellers, photographers, and publishers.  You're supporting your community - and that is the biggest gift you could give to us.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mike, Renee, Beth, Colleen, Deb, Heather, Katie, Kristen,

Rachel M., Rachel O., Rick, and Tod

One-of-a-Kind Gifts That Will be Cherished

Original Fine and Functional Art

Here at Phoenix, we've been delighting in the beautiful art hanging on our walls.  We hope you've been doing the same, and perhaps even contemplating making someone special on your list a gift of original art!  We just wanted to mention that that we have artwork that's accessibly priced for all budgets:  Here are a few possibilities!

These 16"by20" acrylic on canvas paintings are "Ice" and "Light" by Jonathan E. Russell.  Each of these is $150 framed.  They would also work great as a pair!  You can find Jonathan's work above our calendars and bestsellers, as well as on the wall behind our counter.

"Polyphemus" is a photograph by Joshua Mower.  Josh's framed pieces range from $60-$120, plus greeting cards and prints are available.  You can find Joshua's work at the intersection of literary and young adult fiction.

"Winter Weeds," by Kristin Richland, is $100 framed.  Both Kristin Richland and Karen Witt have a variety of imagination-grabbing pieces in our children's section.

"Page 100: Sabriel," by Rick Evans.  Rick Evans takes commissions for black-and-white, pen-and-ink drawings inspired by page 100 of (almost) any book.  They start at only $50.  You can find examples of Rick's work by our graphic novels section.

Potter Warren Dixon.

Warren Dixon is just one of the local potters whose work we feature here at Phoenix.  His pieces start at $15.  You can find Warren's work in the front of the store, near cards and candles
