            | | Dear Friends, The sunlight may be waning, but here at Phoenix things are brighter than ever.   We mean that literally:  We celebrated our grand opening as a gallery in October, and our walls are lined with bright, bold original pieces by remarkable Vermont artists .  We'd love to invite you to come in and see them for yourself - and to read our Curator's Essay in the Vermont Art Zine!  Check it out to learn what we love about the art on our walls. We also mean that figuratively:  We've heard again and again from our customers that you love having a local, independent bookstore here in Essex.  You choose again and again to visit us, to share a bit of your day, to let us help you find just the right book, to spend a few minutes or longer relaxing in our cafe.  We're entering the season of Thanksgiving, and we are constantly grateful for our community.  Thank you. In this issue, you can learn about some great events coming up in November, see photos from our gallery opening , read about our favorite new winter storybooks , and find some literary journals to curl up with as the cool breezes blow in.Sincerely,
Mike, Renee, Beth, Colleen, Deb, Heather, Katie, Kristen,  Rachel M., Rachel O., Rick, and Tod     |

 | PERIODICAL PICKS News from Our Magazine Rack

 Bitter Oleander
Rachel O. says, "Literary magazines can be so taste-specific, it's hard to find one that appeals to a wide readership. Sometimes I think it's even harder to find one that I enjoy. Bitter Oleander promised to be an amalgamation of contemporary poetry, fiction, and essays from national and international authors. I've found that this description is entirely too modest. I found Bitter Oleander compelling from cover to cover, across multiple plots and topics. As the temperatures drop, this time of year always cries out for evenings spent curled up with a blanket and a book, and Bitter Oleander would make an excellent rainy/cold day read. It's subtle yet mesmerizing, the poetry weaving a blanket of images, the prose drawing new worlds from familiar. Gorgeous!"

Did you know? We also have a locally published literary journal! The Salon has a mix of just about everything, including plays, by local authors.

And for those who want to take a journey on the fantastical side, we have Fantasy & Science Fiction, a classic sci-fi/fantasy journal, featuring both new and seasoned authors, short fiction and serial novels.

Come visit our literary magazines and find something to keep you occupied in the hibernation days ahead!

 | PICTURE BOOK PICKS The Magic of Snow

No Two Alike, by Keith Baker
No two snowflakes are alike - almost, but not quite. Follow a pair of birds on a snowflake-filled journey though a gorgeous winter landscape to explore how everything, everywhere is wonderfully unique - from branches and leaves to forests and trees to friends and loved ones. (Hardcover)

Making a Friend, by Alison McGhee
 Illustrated by Marc Rosenthal
Clean, cold, white snow! Snow for sledding. Snow for catching on your tongue. Snow for making a snowman! Snow isn't forever, though. The wind shifts, the weather warms and snow melts into spring. The Snowman has become something else:  the fog, the rain. But, how can this boy forget his good friend? He doesn't - and he doesn't have to.  (Hardcover)

 Red Sled, by Lita Judge
In this nearly wordless picture book, a host of woodland creatures take a child's sled for a nighttime joy ride. Their whimsical ride is gorgeously depicted in bold watercolor, complemented by humorous expressions and pitch-perfect sound effects. With a timeless charm and irresistible characters, Red Sled begs to be read aloud and will surely become a wintertime favorite.    (Hardcover)
