HERBALISM FOR COLD-WEATHER HEALTH Nourishment from Nature
Some of us love cold weather and some of us hate it, but either way, winter can prove a challenge for our health and energy levels. Whether you're itching to get out on your skis or you're strictly an armchair admirer of winter landscapes, herbalism is a great tool to help you stay healthy and happy through the dark times of the year. Here are a few picks from our select collection of herbalism titles.
Backyard Medicine, by Julie Bruton-Seal Kristen says, "This is my go-to book for in-depth information on easy to find (and easy to grow) medicinal herbs. This book has beautiful photos and very readable text, with just the right amount of historical and mythological information about each herb." (Paperback) Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health Get set for winter with an array of recipes to boost immunity, calm coughs, sooth dry skin, and generally keep yourself healthy. The bulk of this accessible, fun, well-balanced book is dedicated to specific herbal remedies for everyone in the family -- children, men, women, and elders. There are tons of yummy herbal dishes and treats, as well as a chapter full of easy and indulgent herbal cosmetic treatments. (Paperback)
The Woman's Handbook of Herbal Healing, by Deb Soule We're big fans of this new title by Maine herbalist Deb Soule. It strikes a wonderful balance in tone and depth: accessible to someone with little or no experience in herbalism, but specialized enough to contain valuable info for even experienced herbalists. It speaks from both the intellect and the heart, and is a caring and practical gift for yourself or any woman in your life.

YOUNG ADULT PICKS Ghosts and Monsters
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin Mara wakes up from a coma with no memory of the accident that caused the deaths of her best friend, boyfriend, and boyfriend's sister. The doctors tell her parents that starting over in a new state and a new school will be good for her and to let the memories come back on their own. But Mara's new start is anything but when she sees the faces of her dead friends everywhere. Then she begins to see people's deaths before they happen - at least she thinks that is what is happening. On top of that, the most beautiful boy she has ever seen can't seem to leave her alone, but is his agenda more than he leads her to believe? (Hardcover)
A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself, Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly-funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined. (Hardcover)
