25% Off* August is Skippyjon Jones Month at Phoenix!
25% Off* Select Picture Books by Judy SchachnerSkippyjon Jones is no ordinary kitten. Oh, no. . . .He's actually El Skippito, a great sword-fighter ready to battle banditos the world over! With a little imagination and a whole lot of fun, this frisky cat dons a mask and cape and saves the day. And along the way, he'll be sure to steal young reader's hearts! Judith Byron Schachner grew up outside of Boston in the 1950's. Her early years were not easy: "Growing up we didn't have much money. My mother was very ill, and to make matters worse, I was extremely shy. All my teachers complained that 'Judith needs to speak up in class, Judith needs to improve in arithmetic, and Judith needs to finish her work on time.' But no one complained about my artwork. On paper I drew myself a world where mothers were healthy and teachers were kind. My life was perfection in pencil." In 1995 Judith wrote and illustrated her first picture book, and has turned out a number of projects since then. "I live in a constant state of 3rd grade bliss - making up stories and drawing pictures. Isn't that what we all did as children?" *In-store purchases only. |

NEWS FROM THE BURLINGTON BOOK FESTIVALHeadlining Author Named Poet Laureate
The city's 7th annual celebration of the written word will feature a headlining appearance by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Philip Levine, who was recently named Poet Laureate of the United States.
"We're tremendously honored to have Philip headlining this year's Grace Paley Poetry Series on Sunday, September 25," said Festival Director Rick Kisonak when making the announcement. "He's a legend and we're very lucky to have him as a highlight of this year's stellar line up."
The Library of Congress has named Philip Levine in the one-year position. Born in Detroit in 1928, Levine, who's won virtually every major prize for his work, has used his poetry to examine blue-collar life, often embroidering everyday events with a sense of myth.
As he told the AP, Levine wasn't sure he should take the Library of Congress post: "I'm a fairly irreverent person and at first I thought, 'This is not you. You're an old union man,'" Levine said. "But I knew if I didn't do this, I would kick myself. I thought, 'This is you. You can speak to a larger public than has been waiting for you in recent years.'"
"I have a feeling there'll be a large crowd waiting for him at this year's Festival," added Kisonak.

NEWS FROM THE MAGAZINE STANDA New Title for Fans of Yoga Journal and Tricycle!
The new arrivals have started! Here's what bookseller Rachel O. has to say about one of our most exciting new magazines:
"I was excited to get Tathaastu into the store. What I had read about it and seen online suggested that it would be a beautiful and rewarding read. I wasn't disappointed.
"For our customers who like magazines such as Tricycle or Yoga Journal, Tathaastu will be another treasure to check out. For those who have always been interested in Eastern philosophies but felt that they weren't applicable to their real lives, Tathaastu offers insightful readings from a remarkably practical standpoint.
"The colors and artwork throughout the magazine are gorgeous and serve to accent the articles.
"As for content, there's a little bit of everything from Hindu mythology to yogic practice to Buddhist wisdom. Whether you dabble in meditation or yoga or have built your life around it, this magazine has much to offer. I've greatly enjoyed reading the current issue and look forward to future ones."

This is Lucia Greenhouse's story about growing up in Christian Science, in a house where you could not be sick, because you were perfect; where no medicine, even aspirin, was allowed. (Hardcover)
