25% Off* August is Max & Ruby Month at Phoenix!
25% Off* Select Picture Books by Rosemary WellsRosemary was born in New York City and raised on the New Jersey shore. She grew up in a home that was always filled with books, dogs, classical music, and other things her parents held in great esteem. Speaking about her youth, Rosemary recalls, "New Jersey was farm country and I spent much of my time outdoors, running around the woods behind our house and playing baseball with the neighbor's kids... I was born during a golden age of childhood in our country's history. And, I was lucky because my parents were happy and they supported all that I wanted to do. They had both been in the theater and understood the arts from the inside. We had a houseful of wonderful books. Reading stories aloud was as much a part of my childhood as the air I breathed." *In-store purchases only. |

OWNER UPDATE: OWNER ACTING UP IN PLAY News From the Waterbury Festival Playhouse
Mike DeSanto, owner of Phoenix Books, is pleased to announce he will be appearing in " The Year Of the Duck " by Israel Horowitz at the Waterbury Festival Playhouse from August 11th to August 27th. If you missed his performance at the Essex Community Players last fall, you can go to http://www.waterburyfestivalplayers.com/ and take a look at what's happening. His role as "Nathan" is a real scene stealer, according to Mike, and it makes him happy to finally be old enough to perform some juicy parts. In order to persuade his fans and friends to make the drive to Waterbury, Mike is offering a 20% off on your next purchase with a ticket stub from the Festival! (Good for any amount, in-stock books only.) Performances start at 7:30 p.m. The theater is located right off the road to Stowe...you can see the tent as you drive up on your left. Please come back after the show to say "hello" if you do come out.
A Note from Mike: "George Pierce is the owner and artistic director of the playhouse, and he has simply constructed a dream for himself. I truly understand his reasons and hope you will think about supporting his efforts in a similar fashion that you support Phoenix Books. I have immense respect for people who put their dreams into action, and theater is even more challenging than bookstores!" www.waterburyfestivalplayers.com

FICTION PICKS Thrills and Chills
Shut Your Eyes Tight, by John Verdon
When he was the NYPD's top homicide investigator, Dave Gurney was never comfortable with the label the press gave him: super detective. He was simply a man who, when faced with a puzzle, wanted to know. He was called to the investigative hunt by the presumptuous arrogance of murderers; by their smug belief that they could kill without leaving a trace. There was always a trace, Gurney believed. But what if, one day, there wasn't? John Verdon has created a portrait of evil let loose across generations that is as rife with moments of touching humanity as it is with spellbinding images of perversity. (Hardcover)
Midnight Movie, by Tobe Hooper The good news: Director Tobe Hooper has been invited to speak at a screening of Destiny Express, a movie he wrote and directed as a teenager, but that hasn't seen the light of day in decades. Hooper's fans are ecstatic. The bad news: Destiny Express proves to be a killer . . . literally. As the death toll mounts, Tobe embarks on a desperate journey to understand the film's thirty-year-old origins - and put an end to the strange epidemic his creation has set in motion. Featuring the terror, humor, and sly documentary style Hooper devotees remember from such classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Midnight Movie is vintage Tobe Hooper, again demonstrating the director's place as one of the godfathers of modern horror.
