Knowledge
Summer
Reading Program!
Over
the summer, we invite and encourage participants to visit Phoenix. While visiting, they'll be
given
a "leaf"
on which they'll document their latest read. Leaves will be attached to our in-store Tree of Knowledge.
Readers help
the Tree grow all summer long by reading books
and gaining new
knowledge. At the end of
the summer, we'll have a
celebration!
Our reading program
is designed
to be laid back, fun, and free of competition.
It will run through the end of August.
Suggested age range is (entering)
K-8.
To celebrate this program, we're discounting a hand-picked selection of books at 20% off!

FICTION Great Summer Reads
The Good Son, by Michael Gruber Somewhere in Pakistan, Sonia Laghari and eight fellow members of a
symposium on peace are being held captive by armed terrorists. Sonia, a
deeply religious woman as well as a Jungian psychologist, tries to keep them all alive by working her way into the
kidnappers' psyches and interpreting their dreams. With her knowledge of
their language, her familiarity with their religion, and her Jungian
training, Sonia confounds her captors with her insights and beliefs. (Hardcover)
Ilustrado, by Miguel Syjuco It begins with a body. On a clear day in winter, the battered corpse of
Crispin Salvador is pulled from the Hudson River--taken from the world
is the controversial lion of Philippine literature. Gone, too, is the
only manuscript of his final book, a work meant to rescue him from
obscurity by exposing the crimes of the Filipino ruling families.
Miguel, his student and only remaining friend, sets out for Manila to

The Long Song, by Andrea Levy The child of a field slave on the Amity sugar plantation, July lives

BOOK CLUB PICK
OF THE MONTH Look Again, by Lisa Scottoline
When reporter Ellen Gleeson gets a "Have You Seen This Child?" flyer in
the mail, she almost throws it away. But something about it makes her
look again, and her heart stops: the child in the photo is identical to
her adopted son, Will. Her every instinct tells her to deny the

WHO/WHAT/WHERE
| On June 9th at Essex Cinemas, Howard Frank Mosher gave a
talk, slideshow, and reading to benefit the Essex Free Library.
"Transforming
History into
Fiction: The Story of a Born Liar,"
chronicles the "making of" Howard's new novel, Walking to
Gatlinburg, a story of survival, wilderness adventure, mystery,
and
love during the Civil War. The event was sponsored by Phoenix, and a great time was had by all!
