"We continue to add new customers, and that reflects the success of our 'one customer at a time' philosophy: one customer at a time who receives our full attention and the best service we can offer with a smile; one customer at a time who discovers us for the first time and leaves feeling this was a place to return to for community, connection and customer service; one customer at a time who decides that there is something... some je ne sais quoi...that makes Phoenix Books special, unique, local, and worth spending time and money to support."

EVENT1 Stephen KiernanSTEPHEN KIERNAN
Kiernan will discuss our neglected American ideals and the people who are living them today - and restoring our nation's dream.
Patriotism has become a loaded word: one that is wielded against people with whom we might disagree, or whose cultural origins don't match our own. But our founding fathers saw patriotism as a dynamic force: an act of service, in an evolving nation that defined its purpose by offering all people a better way of life.  In Authentic Patriotism, award-winning journalist Kiernan explores the original ideals that have been lost in our current climate, and then introduces a range of inspiring people who have revived our national purpose by taking action
WEDNESDAY, MAY 19th at 7:00 PM

EVENT2 Josh WIlkerJOSH WILKER
Josh Wilker will discuss his new book, Cardboard Gods: An All-Amercan Tale Told Through Baseball Cards.
Cardboard Gods is the memoir of a writer who has marked the stages of his life through the baseball cards he collected as a child. Josh writes about an imagined correspondence with his favorite player, Carl Yastrzemski; he uses the magical bubble-blowing powers of journeyman Kurt Bevacqua to shed light on the weakening of the powerful childhood bond with his older brother; he considers the doomed utopian back-to-the-land dreams of his hippie parents against the backdrop of inimitable 1970s baseball figures such as "Designated Pinch Runner" Herb Washington and Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. This book captures the experience of growing up obsessed with baseball cards and explores what it means to be a fan of the game.
THURSDAY, MAY 20th at 7:00 PM

EVENT2 Deborah Lee LuskinDEBORAH LEE LUSKIN
Vermonter Deborah Lee Luskin will read from her highly-praised first novel, Into The Wilderness.
"Will I ever adjust to this place?" VPR commentator Deborah Lee Luskin offers engaging answers to that question in Into the Wilderness. In 1964, Rose Mayer buries her second husband and wonders what she's going to do with the rest of her life. Reluctantly, she visits her son at his summer place in Vermont, where there are neither sidewalks, Democrats, nor other Jews. There is, however, Percy Mendell, a born and bred Vermonter who has never married, never voted for a Democrat, and never left the state. Filmmaker Jay Craven calls Into The Wilderness, an "absorbing, affectionate, and often funny slice of early 1960's Vermont life." Novelist Philiph Baruth adds, "Rose Mayer is an honest-to-God miracle."

The InheritanceThe Inhertance, by Simon Tolkien
When a famed Oxford historian is found dead in his study one night, all evidence points to his son, Stephen. About to be disinherited from the family fortune, Stephen returns to home after a long estrangement - and it happens to be the night his father is killed. But there were five other people in the manor house at the time, and as their stories slowly emerge - along with the revelation that the deceased man was involved in a deadly hunt for a priceless relic in Northern France - the race is on to save Stephen from a death sentence.

American GodsAmerican Gods, by Neil Gaiman
American Gods contains both the magical and the mundane, a fantastic world of divine beings and bizarre happenings and a world of prisons, rundown roadside attractions, and quaint small towns.  It is, in many ways, a classic road trip novel through an America at once eerily familiar and utterly alien. A double-staff pick, Bridget calls this a "must-read for any self-respecting sci-fi/fantasy fan," while Kristen adds anyone with an interest in mythology or magical realism to that list.

BOOK CLUB PICK OF THE MONTH
The Lace Reader, by Brunonia Barry

"Evocative, layered, smart, and astonishing" -Joshilyn Jackson
The Lace ReaderTowner Whitney hails from a family of Salem women who can read the future in the patterns in lace, and who have guarded a history of secrets going back generations - secrets that are only now coming to light. This "[u]nusual and otherworldly" tale is "a gorgeously written literary novel that's also a doozy of a thriller, capped with a jaw-dropping denouement that will leave even the most careful reader gasping" (Kirkus Reviews, Dallas Morning News). "Evocative, smart, layered, and astonishing," with a vivid sense of place and strong, complex, and "intriguingly real" characters, this book is Kristen's staff pick and an ideal choice for book clubs (Joshilyn Jackson, San Antonio Express-News).

AMANDABDID YOU KNOW...?

Almost a year ago the New England Independent Booksellers Association put out a call for a new logo. Out of hundreds of submissions, they chose a design by Jeffersonville's Amanda Begins of Amanda Begins Designs. She was awarded a $250 gift certificate to her local independent bookseller - in this case, Phoenix Books!

"I wanted to submit because I love books and NEIBA is a really great organization," says Amanda.  "NEIBA wanted something modern, but also something that represented who they are. I spent a lot of time playing with the shapes of books; how they looked stacked, or on a bookshelf, opened or closed, or leaning on each other. In the logo, I worked with these shapes to create the 'idea' of books."  When asked why she chose to get her gift certificate from Phoenix Books, she says, "I love the atmosphere of the store and the staff is amazing. It's a great place to look around and find a little inspiration on a rainy day."

Amanda received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Design from Maine College of Art, in Portland. While there, she studied a wide variety of design as well as printmaking and letterpress. Currently, she works at an educational production house that develops educational materials for Vermont as well as other states all over the country. She is developing a line of greeting cards that incorporates typography, color, and dingbats.
