The Phoenix Review

March 2009

Dear Friends,

March, as usual, is coming in like a lion.  It's the perfect weather for curling up with a good book, though we hope you'll join us for our Open Mic on Wednesday, not to mention our Knit Night and Newt Night later in the month.  These interactive events are just the things to fend off cabin fever.

In this issue, we've added a new feature:  a recommendation specifically for book groups.  We'd also like to invite you to recommend books to us:  Reply to this newsletter with your latest favorite title, a sentence or two about the book, and whether you'd like to appear by name or anonymously, and we'll pass on your recommendation in our next newsletter!

Sincerely,
The staff of Phoenix Books

ON THE SHELVES AT PHOENIX

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day and the Red Clover NomineesIn The Woods

Leprechauns, pots of gold, shamrocks, and green beer are popular images on Saint Patrick's Day; but this year, why not celebrate the old country by enjoying the work of a modern Irish author?  You may have heard of Tana French's bestselling thriller In the Woods:  It was an IndieBound bestseller for 39 weeks.  Anne Enright's The Gathering won the 2007 Man Booker Prize, and she has a new compilation of short stories entitled Yesterday's Weather.  The list of contemporary authors from the Emerald Isle is a long one, including such favorites as Roddy Doyle, Maeve Binchy, Edna O'Brien, and Frank Delaney.
Sandy's Circus
For our younger readers, and the young at heart, we are excited to announce that the 2009-2010 Red Clover Award nominees have been named!  The Red Clover Award was created in 1995.  Conceived by Eileen Christelow, this children's choice award was designed to help young children experience the unique genius of the picture book and develop a lasting appreciation for excellence in writing and illustraton.  Check out Sandy's Circus, by Tanya Lee Stone, and the other Red Clover nominees in our children's section or online.

BOOK CLUB PICK OF THE MONTH

  Run, by Ann Patchett

Set over a period of 24 hours, Run shows how worlds of privilege and poverty can coexist only blocks apart from each other, and how family can include the most Run, by Ann Patchettunlikely of people, in this novel about secrets, duty, responsibility, and the lengths people will go to protect their children.

"Run is a novel with timeless concerns at its heart - class and belonging, parenthood and love - and if it wears that heart on its sleeve, then it does so with confidence. And so it should: the book is lovely to read and is satisfyingly bold in its attempt to say something patient and true about family.... Run is a book that sets
out inventively to contend with the temper of our times..."  -Publishers Weekly

Did you know?  Book clubs are eligible for a 15% discount on books ordered from Phoenix!  At least five copies must be ordered, and all copies must be purchased through your book club's coordinator, for discount to apply.
