L&M Daughtry Farm: Good Neighbors and Environmental Stewards

NCPC honored the recipients of the 2009 Environmental Steward Award at their recent annual conference in Raleigh. Two farms were honored with this prestigious award: Butler Farms of Lillington and this week's featured winner, L&M Daughtry Farm.

L&M Daughtry farm is owned and operated by Lynn and Mark Daughtry. The farm includes a farrow-to-ween operation with 800 sows and nine finishing floors with a finishing capacity of 6,300. The pigs are grown on contract for Prestage Farms.

Located in Sampson County and bordered by Great Coharie Creek, this well-managed farm is fortunate to have an abundance of wildlife throughout. To enhance that wildlife habitat, the Daughtrys have implemented innovative management practices that provide field buffer strips for wildlife feeding areas. These buffers also protect the farm's natural resources by serving as enhanced protection for the nearby waters that drain to the Great Coharie Creek. Mark Daughtry

The farm also incorporates a forced air composter which provides for a safe and efficient means of handling mortality on the farm site while protecting natural resources.

The Daughtrys not only make a living on their farm, they also reside there. So they are always happy to showcase their farm in an effort to demonstrate how well swine operations can coexist with nature and the surrounding rural environment.

Congratulations to L&M Daughtry Farm for being named one of NCPC's 2009 Environmental Stewards!
Russell TuckerRep. Russell Tucker Will Not Seek Re-Election to NC House of Representatives

Tucker to spend time with family and refocus on other efforts

RALEIGH - Rep. Russell Tucker has decided to not seek re-election to the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Tucker will participate in this year's "short session" of the General Assembly and then retire from the legislature to spend some time with family and refocus on other efforts. Tucker represents District 4 in the House, which includes Duplin County and part of Onslow County. He will have served in the House for 10 years when his latest term ends in December.

"To constituents of House District 4, thank you for your votes and confidence in electing me to represent you in the North Carolina General Assembly," Tucker said. "It continues to be an honor and privilege to serve you."

"Rep. Tucker has been a persistent advocate for the people of southeastern North Carolina," Speaker Joe Hackney said. "Whether he is working on agriculture issues or military matters, his interest has always been in improving the lives of the people of his community. Most recently, he has chaired our Pensions and Retirement Committee, a difficult duty, and he has done an outstanding job ensuring our workers get the security they deserve. We will miss him in our halls, and I know his constituents will miss his leadership."

Rep. Tucker currently serves as chair of the Pensions and Retirement Committee and vice chair of the Agriculture, Local Government II, Public Utilities, and Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government committees. He is also a member of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

Rep. Tucker is retired from County Government. Tucker said he will continue to be a part of the future and do all he can to ensure that North Carolina will be a good place to raise a family while enjoying a good quality of life.

Jamie Keener HeadshotNCSU Student Recipient of 2010 Lois Britt Scholarship

Jamie Marie Keener, a student at NC State University, was recently named one of only four students nationwide to be awarded the 2010 Lois Britt Scholarship.

Jamie Marie Keener was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. Jamie discovered early in life that she had a great passion for animals of all species through both her experiences riding and showing American Saddlebred horses and working at a local small animal clinic in high school. Naturally, Jamie set her sights on attending North Carolina State University and dreamed of one day also attending the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine.

Jamie's career path came more clearly into focus when she signed up for an Introduction to Animal Science class at NC State under Dr. Billy Flowers and took her first visit to the NC State Swine Educational Unit. It was then that Jamie knew that she wanted to become a lifelong contributor and supporter of the swine industry.

Currently, Jamie is a junior at NCSU, majoring in Animal Science with minors in Agribusiness, Genetics, and Microbiology.  She has had the privilege of interning under Drs. Sam Jones, Glen Almond, and Adam Moeser - all of whom are on faculty at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, she has had the opportunity to assist several industry veterinarians on various projects.

Jamie Keener2Towards her goal of contributing to the pork industry, Jamie has become involved in the work of the North Carolina Pork Council. She is also active in the Sigma Alpha Women's Professional Agricultural Sorority and N.C. Farm Bureau's Young Farmers and Ranchers NCSU Chapter.

This summer Jamie hopes to obtain an internship with a swine production company veterinarian. She will also be traveling to Michigan to work with a dairy practitioner at Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine to learn more about dairy cattle medicine.  After graduation she hopes to attend a veterinary school with a strong food animal medicine program, eventually working towards a PhD in Epidemiology.

When asked her philosophy, Jamie will tell you that she believes, "with a strong passion, good work ethic, and commitment to education, one can achieve great things."

And that's exactly what Jamie intends to do.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) celebrated its 25th Anniversary of Live Hog Futures in 1990 and to commemorate this milepost, they asked to sponsor a Scholarship Program through the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC).  This is the nineteenth consecutive year of their sponsorship of the Pork Industry Scholarship Program recognizing outstanding youth in the pork community.  Four $2,500 scholarships are awarded to students who intend to pursue a career in the pork industry.  These talented and thoughtful students will likely emerge as industry leaders someday.
