Nahunta's Mack Pierce Honored
Pork King

Last week's Porkline reported that the late Ron Craig had been inducted into the Wayne County Agriculture Hall of Fame at a ceremony last month.

Another notable member of the pork community received a Wayne County Agriculture Hall of Fame award this year as well: Mack Pierce.

Mack Pierce is the owner and operator of the famous Nahunta Pork Center. Pierce opened the Nahunta Pork Center in 1975 and the once family-run operation has grown to a business employing 60-80 people each year. The Pork Center actually began as the Nahunta Slaughterhouse in the 1950's as a hog-buying station and custom slaughter plant.

Pierce is a charter member of the Nahunta Fire Department and a former member of the Mount Olive College Board of Trustees.

He and his wife Jean have two children and four grandchildren.

Albertson Headshot Albertson to Run

According to the Raleigh News and Observer's website, State Senator Charlie Albertson of Duplin County, who has served in the Senate since 1993, is planning to run again in 2010.

"Until people hear differently, they can assume I am running," Albertson said. "Right now I plan to run again." Albertson, 77, is a co-chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and is secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
