 Transition

Sweet Transitions

This year marks the 30th year of business for VIHC, and the 70th revolution around the sun for me. I recognize this as a time to refocus my daily life. My intention is to spend less time in the day to day
work of VIHC and prepare for new leadership of this sweet little company.

VIHC has been a journey in learning for me. It has been a way to

This worker bee on a kiawe flower is carrying pollen on her hind leg.

practice what I believe are important values in life: social justice, environmental responsibility, and spiritual growth. As I continue to look for ways to deepen my expression of these values, I am also looking for ways to ensure that VICH continues along this path ...

In every business, there comes a time when the leadership (and even the ownership) moves on to someone new, usually someone younger. As I see this transition emerging on the horizon, I am committed to finding a person or team that is committed to the kind of values that will help make the earth a better, more peaceful, more enduring place to live.

To that end, VIHC is looking for the next 'navigator' to steer this little business toward more earth-friendly practices, while continuing to produce one of the world's finest honeys. If you are that person or know someone who might be, please let me know.

PosNeg

Positive and Negative

On the relative plane where we all live, positive and negative exist as two sides of the same coin. On this plane, positive does not exist without negative; we can't see white without black to contrast it.
White winter in Hawaii: tropical palms with snow-capped Mauna Loa in the background.

At the same time, when negative and positive are in balance, a kind of harmony is created. The mundane level -- where we exist most of the time (there are other levels) -- is constantly in flux between positive and negative.

While the past few years have posed many challenges for VIHC (environmental, economic, social), we have consciously chosen to adopt a positive attitude.  In doing so, we have experienced that our response to a circumstance can be more important than the circumstance itself -- which is usually beyond our control. Taken to the next level, a positive attitude can help create a positive future.

Thus, after several years of scarcity in terms of honey production, 2011 was exceptionally productive: from the Puako forest's prolific bloom and the bees' record honey harvest, to our small but very effective team.

Abundance

A Year of Abundance

We are very grateful for this abundance that has been offered to us! In times of radical change and turmoil upon the earth, it is important to look for the positive and embrace the perennial values that we all know in our hearts to be true.

While the forces of power, greed and narrow, self-serving interests prowl the earth, we at VIHC do our best to stay focused on the goodness and abundance that we experience.

In celebration of our good fortune, and to practice the values we espouse, we would like to share this luck and abundance with you this holiday season by offering a 5% discount across all of our honey products -- in addition to our usual series of holiday specials.

We hope this offering might help make your gift-giving a little more possible this holiday season, and provide you with a little more sweetness in the start of the New Year.

We know this is a small and perhaps symbolic gesture in the face of the huge inequalities that exist on earth, but I firmly believe that an accumulation of such gestures will ultimately turn us humans toward kindness and generosity. Thus, in each small act, we do our part to bring joy into the world.

May there be peace in your heart, in your family, in your community and in the world.richard

Staff
Meet the Honey Team

It takes a team to accomplish what VIHC has achieved this year ... more than a sum of each individual's part, the result is a product of myriad interconnections between VIHC team members.

Of course, the exceptional bloom in the Puako forest also played a crucial role, as this is the single source for Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey!

Beekeeper Art.

From the human side, the story all begins with Art Genier, VIHC's head beekeeper. Art arrived from Vermont just over a year ago, and has been a beekeeper for most of his life. His responsibilities at VIHC include harvesting honey and managing bee colonies, i.e. raising new queens, treating for diseases, and moving hives to different locations as the seasons and bloom cycles change on the Big Island.

Once Art harvests the honey and brings it up to the

Sunee at the uncapper.

farm, it enters the realm of Sunee Campbell -- our production 'guru'. After more than 13 years at VIHC, Sunee is the longest-working team member other than Richard! Her responsibilities include honey extraction, bottling, labeling, packing, shipping, candle making, melting and embossing wax foundation!

Donelle.

Luckily, Donelle Rodriguez came on board to help Sunee this June, after a year and a half away from VIHC. We are thrilled to have Donelle back at the farm, as her skills, experience, and contagious boom of laughter really help us get through the day!

While the field and production crew is hard at work, VIHC's office staff is also busily buzzing. Jan Hino just finished her second year at VIHC, providing administrative support, processing orders and customer service, among many other

things; if you've called us anytime in the past two years,

chances are you've spoken to

Jan! In 2011, Jan also started to work in the honey house, where extracting and bottling give her a break from the computer screen, while enhancing her knowledge of the business to better answer all your honey questions!

Similarly, Dana Shapiro, who joined the VIHC team this year, does a variety

of office and production work, and also helps Art with the bees. Dana

just finished her Masters degree in rural development in Israel. Her responsibilities at VIHC include social marketing, communications, and strategic planning. In addition, her creative baking has benefited greatly from the recent infusion of copious

amounts of VIHC honey!
Candice, business navigator.

Candice Choy, our wonderfully skilled business manger, keeps the financial ship of VIHC sailing, as she integrates and manages every aspect of VIHC from her pilot seat at the computer. Meanwhile, Clara and Terri fill out the office team, especially when Jan and Dana are in the honey house or out in the field. Our sales reps, Donna Sullivan on Oahu and Sarah Cumming in New York, are also an important part of the VIHC team -- working from their respective off-farm locations to keep our honey available from Hawaii to New York.
