Storm Flattens Ohio Valley Towers
The 50,000-watt radio station WWVA-AM lost all three of its broadcast towers located in St. Clairsville, Ohio, on August 4 when they were knocked down by a storm with winds estimated between 70 and 100 mph. The storm caused three deaths in the Upper Ohio Valley, knocked down trees and left thousands without power days later, according to the Associated Press. MORE
FCC Shot Clock Stays on Target

Antennas
The horizontally polarized, omnidirectional antenna systems offered by Laird Technologies are constructed of rigid aluminum extrusion, which is powder-coat painted. They feature integrated 50-ohm passive feeds that come standard with type N female connectors. Horizontally polarized antennas offer the user great rejection of interference if that interference is vertically polarized, as is the case in most WLAN systems. The antenna is designed for 2.4 GHz ISM band applications, 802.11b and 802.11g wireless systems, point-to-multi-point systems, base station antennas, wireless broadband systems, and Wi-Fi access points. www.lairdtech.com

Connectors
Advantage-type 716 DIN straight and right-angle EZ no-solder connectors for LMR-400 and LMR-600 cables are now available from Times Microwave Systems. None of the connectors require braid trimming after cable prep (except the EZ-600-716F ). Other features include no soldering required on the center conductor, combination hex/knurl coupling nut that allows tightening by hand or with a wrench, tri-metal plating instead of silver plating, chamfered cable entry hole for ease of termination, ridged landing area on the aft end for better grip and sealing of the heat shrink boot, and enhanced impedance matching to provide superior VSWR performance. www.timesmicrowave.com
Microwave Backhaul
Exalt Communications has launched the ExploreAir microwave backhaul platform, which transmits at speeds exceeding 500 megabits per-second (Mbps) full duplex for all Ethernet packet types and sizes. A built-in compression option enables speeds of up to 1000 Mbps with a single carrier and in a single channel. The unit operates from the 2 GHz band up to the 40 GHz band in a compact, lightweight, all-outdoor configuration. It features errorless and jitterless adaptive modulation with integrated QoS, which extends link distance, reduces antenna size, and dynamically allocates priority to TDM and IP traffic on the same link, significantly lowering overall capex costs. www.exaltcom.com

FCC Moves to Promote Wireless Backhaul
Carriers would see a jump in spectrum available for backhaul as a result of the FCC's latest broadband wireless proceeding. The FCC has proposed modifying regulations in order to make microwave spectrum more accessible for backhaul. As a result, the Commission hopes, high-capacity microwave services will become more readily available for 4G networks. MORE
