Grass Fire in Calif. Takes Out Radio Towers
A grass fire in Sacramento, Calif., destroyed one radio tower July 15, and damaged at least one other, according to Fox40 News, KXTL. After the intense flames burned through guy wires the 600-foot structure fell to the ground according to Capt. Jim Doucette of the Sacramento City Fire Department. The tower broadcast Radio Disney with the call sign KIID 1470AM. VIDEO
Rules May Fail to Stimulate Applications for Broadband Funding
The race is on for companies seeking stimulus money to provide broadband communications, but the rules may provide some serious handicaps for many applicants. Applications will be accepted between July 14 and August 14 for the approximately $4.7 billion NTIA Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) and the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP), which areis charged with expanding the reach and speed of broadband services by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Sprint Deal with Ericsson May Increase Tower Buildout
Sprint Nextel has come to a fork in the road - and has taken it. With mounting losses, the carrier badly needed to cut costs, and with a growing reputation for network quality issues it needed to improve the performance of its wireless service. It takes more than a recession to scare Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel). The Sprint PCS affiliate of Sprint Nextel says it is taking the "long view," completing its 46th new cell site this year with coverage in York County, Pa. And it is going for more. MORE
 
Will Galena Summit Ever See a Cell Tower?
The long-awaited answer to that question may come before the summer is over. It has been a long time coming, since 2003 to be exact, but the struggle over building a cell tower on Galena Summit, north of Ketchum, Idaho, may be coming to its denouement in August, according to the Times-News. MORE
