DAS System in Arizona to Solve Prickly Coverage ProblemsSighting
a saguaro cactus is a sign that you have entered the Sonoran Desert,
which covers Arizona and a lot of the Southwest. In the future, it
might also mean that you are in range of Scottsdale, Ariz.'s
distributed antenna system (DAS). Stephen Garcia, Newpath
Networks director, external affairs and land use, made a presentation
in mid-October before the Scottsdale City Council on a proposed DAS
network, which would use a large number of saguaro cactus concealments.

FCC Cites Carrier for Antenna Location ViolationThe FCC issued a Notice of Violation on Oct. 10 to United States Cellular concerning discrepancies in the location information on one of its towers, which was registered in 1997 before GPS surveys became common. In August, the FCC's Enforcement Bureau inspected the tower, which is near Adin, Calif., and observed that antenna structure was "approximately ... 140 feet from its [FCC] registered location." Naked Man Arrested Climbing Cell Tower You can bet he wasn't wearing the proper safety harness.
Witnesses said a 23-year-old man jumped a fence wearing pants and had stripped down to nothing before climbing up the side a cell tower in the small town of Lowry Crossing, Texas, northwest of Dallas, according to the Dallas Morning News. MORE

Sabre Industries Opens Galvanizing Facility in Texas Sabre Industries has opened Sabre Galvanizing, which uses the latest technology in hot-dip galvanizing. The new facility is located behind Sabre Tubular Structures in Alvarado, Texas, where the company makes its monopoles and utility poles. Galvanizing makes the towers last more than 70 years, according to Sabre. MORE

Carrier Deploys Security at Texas Cell SitesOne of the top U.S. wireless companies has deployed the SmarterDVR 200 at cell tower sites in Texas to provide security and reduce thefts of its property, according to Smarter Security Systems, a provider of cell site security solutions. American Tower Sees Positive Results in Third QuarterCompared with same quarter last year, third-quarter 2008 rental and management revenue for American Tower increased 10 percent to $394.4 million and adjusted EBITDA grew 11.6 percent to $277.5 million, which Jim Taiclet, company CEO said reflected the stability and growth prospects the tower industry. Crown Castle Reports Site Rental Growth, Plans to Use Cash to Pay Debt Maturities Crown Castle International reported positive year-over-year results for the third quarter. Site rental revenue increased $27.2 million, or 8 percent, to $354 million from $326.8 million. Adjusted EBITDA also increased $21.9 million, or 11 percent, to $217.7 million from $195.8 million. Recurring cash flow was up 23 percent from $100.8 million to $123.5 million. MORE

Wireless Backhauler Experiences Solid Third Quarter FiberTower, a wireless backhaul services provider, has reported a 13 percent increase in service revenues to $13.4 million compared to $11.9 million for the second quarter. The company noted that "new billing customer locations and greater penetration in existing markets drove the increase in service revenues during the third quarter of 2008, which also included service revenues generated through the delivery of Ethernet-based links."
