Cequel Sites Purchases Excell Communications
Cequel Sites Holdings has acquired Excell Communications, one of the largest site development and construction firms serving the wireless industry in the Southeast. It has a suite of products and services that include site acquisition and engineering, as well as environmental, regulatory compliance and project management services. Steve White, Excell founder and president, will leave the company, and Paul Estes, who currently serves as executive vice president for Cequel III, a telecommunications management and investment firm based in St. Louis, MO, will become Excell's president and CEO.  MORE
In a Win-Wind Solution, Ice Arena May Opt for wind turbine/cell tower
Martha's Vineyard Arena, an ice skating rink on the exclusive island, was working with Maxton Technology, a wireless telecommunication services provider, on the idea of leasing space for a cell tower to raise needed revenue to pay for increasing utilities, according to the Martha's Vineyard Times.
But then Gary Harcourt of Great Wind Rock, an Island-based small wind energy consulting and installation business, approached the board with a proposal to build a 165-foot tall wind turbine from Entegrity Wind Systems, which would reduce energy costs by 20 percent.

Bringing Wireless Siting to the Hinterlands
Siting a cell tower in rural Cambodia, Suriname or India may not be hard from a regulatory standpoint, but making the network work from a technological perspective has been another story. Until now.

MCG Dumps Stake in Global Tower Partners
Sydney-based Macquarie Communications Infrastructure Group has sold its 29 percent stake in Global Tower Partners (GTP), an owner and operator of towers and sites for wireless communications services with 3,000 towers in the United States. MORE
CTIA Siting Petition Looks to Speed Up Zoning Boards
Some believe Congress has gone too far in giving power to wireless carriers in the siting process. CTIA - The Wireless Association, however, does not share that view. It believes that local zoning boards are exercising power outside of the rules in the Communications Acts of 1934 to slow down, at best, or illegally block tower siting, at worst. MORE
VZW Enhances Upstate NY with 80 New Sites
Verizon Wireless has kept its string going. For eight years running, the company has invested more than $100 million in network enhancements throughout Upstate New York. This year's improvements 80 new cell sites throughout the region. Since 2000, the bill has added up to more than $1 billion since 2000. MORE
West Virginia Strives to Fill Dead Spots
West Virginia is one of the largest areas in the eastern United States without consistent cell coverage, according to Verizon's current coverage map. Even though this rural, mountainous state lacks the coverage or other states, it is diligently working to fill in the dead zones, according to the Herald-Dispatch.com.  MORE

Fuel Cell Backup Power for Site a First for CT
T-Mobile will deploy the first backup power fuel cell to be used for a wireless application in Connecticut. The 5kW GenCore hydrogen fuel cell from Plug Power will serve as backup power for a cell tower on the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs, CT. MORE

Church Backs Away from Cell Tower Plan Under Pressure from Neighbors
In the end, the church in Fairlawn, OH, lost its faith in cellular communications. Faith Lutheran Church has dropped its plans put a cell phone tower on church property after dissent arose to a clamor from the neighbors and the Catholic church next door, according to the Beacon Journal.com. MORE
