Tower Workers Exemplify Respect for Communications
On July 28, a television news reporter, Abby Wuellner, responded to the base of a 2,000-foot TV tower in Fordland, MO, when fire departments from four communities sent rescuers after neighbors reported hearing screams from men working on the tower. The men, who were painting the tower, were yelling to coworkers on the ground to tell them they had dropped their two-way radio and were preparing to descend. They could not continue working without the radio communications link. MORE
NBC TV Program Highlights Climbers and Towers
(Editor's note: If you watched the Dateline Presents episode about tower climbers and if you have an opinion to express and you can give your permission to publish it, please send your comment to the AGL magazine editor at dbishop@agl-mag.com.)

Broadcast on July 21, the NBC television network's Dateline Presents episode "Tower Dogs" followed a tower crew for four months to document part of what tower maintenance company owners, subcontractors and workers face when working on cell towers.  MORE
Lightning Plays Havoc with Public Safety Communications
It kinda makes you wonder what the grounding system was good for.

Late in July, lightning struck a 180-foot-tall antenna in the municipal complex of Middlesex Borough, NJ. The bolt shot down the leg of the tower and hit the ground, knocking out emergency police communications for several towns in central New Jersey, according to MyCentralNewJersey.com. The ball of fire also disrupted telephone and Internet service to the public safety communications center. MORE
Tower Company Gets Rancher's Goat
Cell towers have been suspected of dangerous RF emissions, but have never been seen as a threat to goats.

The goats and cellular communications have peacefully coexisted since American Tower raised the cell tower on a farm in Hernando County on the Gulf Coast of Florida nine years ago, according to Tampa Bay 10 News. MORE
Communications Tower Falls Victim to Possible Twister
Violent high winds, possibly a tornado, caused a 300-foot-tall communications tower to collapse "like an accordion" within its support wires early in August in Grayville, IL, according to the Evansville Courier and Press. No injuries were reported. MORE
Failure of Phone Circuit on Cell Tower Delays Fire Response
As a fire destroyed a barn, a malfunctioning Verizon phone circuit on an American Tower cell tower near Lansdale, PA, delayed the response of the Hatfield Volunteer Fire Company, according to the Lansdale Reporter. MORE
BZA Fails to See the Light; Cell Tower Must Go
The Board of Zoning Appeals in Onalaska, WI, has denied a request by AT&T Wireless to allow lighting required by the Federal Aviation Administration to remain on the cell tower, according to Onalaska Community Life. MORE
Galena Mount Cell Site Controversy Plays Out in the Press
As the comment period nears its end on Aug. 28, the public is already expressing its opinions concerning the rejection of a cell site on Galena Mount in Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area through strongly worded letters to the editor. In a letter to the Idaho Mountain Express and Guide, one woman writes about how upset she was to see an auto accident in the Sawtooth area and not have the ability to call for help. Another letter notes what it calls the hypocrisy of the cell site critics.  MORE
