Billion Dollar Purchase of Towers Shines Spotlight on an Industry Flush with Cash
Showing healthy cash reserves, the tower industry launched a flurry of mergers and acquisition activity in recent weeks. In the span of three days, late in July, more than 4,000 towers were sold for a total of more than a billion dollars.

In July 21, SBA Communications, Boca Raton, FL, announced an agreement to acquire Westborough, MA-based Optasite.

On July 22, SBA announced it would acquire Boxborough, MA-based Lightower Wireless.
 
On July 23, Cary, NC-based TowerCo announced an agreement to buy 3,300 towers from Sprint Nextel. MORE
Fatality on Highway Near Proposed Galena Summit Cell Tower Evokes Emotions
On July 20, driving home after a day on the lake, a 60-year-old man passed out while driving down the highway not far from the Galena Summit in Sawtooth National Recreational Area north of Ketchum, ID, where a cell tower had been proposed. PCIA Show Offers Up Variety of Learning Experiences
PCIA's 2008 Wireless Infrastructure Show will feature a blended approach to learning, including keynote speakers, moderated panel sessions and interactive luncheon seminars. The show, which takes place October 12-15 at the Westin Diplomat Hotel and Spa in Hollywood, FL, will benefit from sessions moderated by carriers, infrastructure providers and equipment vendors.  MORE
Proposed Trinity County Cell Towers Teeter on the Edge
A $2.5 million grant to build cell towers in rural Trinity County, Northern California, is in jeopardy due to a contract dispute with Verizon Wireless concerning design and engineering costs, according to the Trinity Journal.
 
The project is designed to bring cellular service to remote regions of the mountainous county, some of which don't have wireline phone service. MORE
Man Dies in Fall from Cell Tower in NJ
A Franklin man died when he fell roughly 60 feet from a cell phone tower in Vineland, NJ, according to Gannett's Courier Post. MORE
Body found Near American Tower Cell Tower
The body of a man who appeared to have fallen from a cell tower in Tonawanda, NY, was found late in July inside the fenced enclosure by a crew clearing brush in, according to The Tonawanda News. MORE
Collocation Speeds New Antennas to Adirondack Northway
Six more cell-phone antenna panels have been granted fast-track approval by the Adirondack Park Agency for collocation on an existing 237-foot tower on the Adirondack Northway in upstate New York, according to the Press Republican. MORE
Lightning Strike Knocks Out Digital Antenna
Tower workers in Maryville, MO, in recent days repaired the KXCV/KRNW radio tower to retrieve and repair a digital antenna that had been struck by lightning, according to the Maryville Daily Forum. MORE

Motorola Looks to Fix to Seven Digital Towers in Chicago
After evaluating 24 antenna sites in the Chicago Fire Department's $22 million digital radio system, Motorola recommended that seven locations needed work - everything from shortening or strengthening towers and removing unused antennas to installing air-conditioning for digital equipment, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Verizon Wireless Pours $75 Million into Florida Network in First Half of 2008
Verizon Wireless has invested nearly $75 million on new cell sites, network facilities and other technologies to enhance services and coverage throughout Florida in the first six months of 2008, according to a company press release. MORE
American Tower Reports Second Quarter Financial Results
American Tower Corporation has reported second quarter financial results, including a total revenue increase to $393.7 million, an adjusted EBITDA increase to $272.3 million and $176.8 million in cash provided by operating activities. MORE
Crown Castle Declares Quarterly Preferred Stock Dividend Rate
Crown Castle International will pay a quarterly dividend on its 6.25 percent convertible preferred stock on August 15 to holders of record on Aug. 1, 2008. The dividend will be paid in cash at a rate of $0.78125 per share of preferred stock. Crown Castle owns, operates and manages more than 22,000 wireless communication sites in the United States.
SBA Sees Leasing Revenue Growth, Losses Increase
Second quarter over year earlier period

While site leasing revenue grew 17.8 percent and tower cash flow grew at a rate of 23.8 percent, SBA's second quarter saw a net loss of $18.4 million, or 17 cents per share, compared with a loss of $15.1 million, or 15 cents per share, for the same quarter in 2007. MORE
NextG Throws the Switch on Philly DAS Network
NextG Networks has launched a large distributed antenna system (DAS) network in Philadelphia. With just over 400 DAS sites providing coverage over 110 square miles, the network provides a new mobile telecommunications infrastructure for metropolitan residents and visitors. The deployment represents NextG's first major DAS system in the Northeast and expands NextG's presence in the United States.

Carolinas Wireless Association Raises Money for Cancer Research
The Carolinas Wireless Association's 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament, held June 10 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh, had 175 players plus volunteers and raised over $12,000. Proceeds of the Carolinas Wireless Association Golf Tournament were donated to University of North Carolina Hospital Ovarian Cancer Research. MORE
