Billion Dollar Purchase of Towers Shines Spotlight on an Industry Flush with Cash Showing healthy cash reserves, the tower industry launched a flurry of mergers and acquisition activity in recent weeks. In the span of three days, late in July, more than 4,000 towers were sold for a total of more than a billion dollars.
In July 21, SBA Communications, Boca Raton, FL, announced an agreement to acquire Westborough, MA-based Optasite.
On July 22, SBA announced it would acquire Boxborough, MA-based Lightower Wireless.
On July 23, Cary, NC-based TowerCo announced an agreement to buy 3,300 towers from Sprint Nextel. MORE |

Proposed Trinity County Cell Towers Teeter on the EdgeA $2.5 million grant to build cell towers in rural Trinity County, Northern California, is in jeopardy due to a contract dispute with Verizon Wireless concerning design and engineering costs, according to the Trinity Journal. Crown Castle Declares Quarterly Preferred Stock Dividend Rate Crown Castle International will pay a quarterly dividend on its 6.25 percent convertible preferred stock on August 15 to holders of record on Aug. 1, 2008.
