Forum Seeks to Inform on `Intelligent' Cell Tower Siting
Zoning and liability issues, as well as research on the health and environmental effects of wireless technologies will be on the table, as several conservation groups gather January 12 in Litchfield County, Conn., for an educational forum on tower siting.
B. Blake Levitt, an author on non-ionizing radiation, will speak on concerns raised by the spread of wireless technologies.
The forum will target some of the practices of the Connecticut Siting Council (CSC), which has jurisdiction over tower siting. "The council's charge is to be comprehensive in its review and analysis of proposed cell sites," said S. Derek Phelps, CSC executive director. "While we take up the question of impact on ecology and wildlife, we also evaluate need and the benefit of a site to the users of wireless technologies." MORE |
American Tower Alleges Rival Impersonated CEO
American Tower Corp. has sued Jide Zeitlin (at left), an executive who heads a rival wireless tower operator, for defamation and computer fraud.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, alleges that Zeitlin impersonated American Tower Chief Executive James Taiclet in communications with American Tower investors.
According to the complaint, Zeitlin, founder of India-based Independent Mobile Infrastructure (IMIL) forwarded a negative article about American Tower stock option practices to two of its largest investors using an email that misappropriated Taiclet's identity, according to Reuters News Agency. Since then he has invested $50,000 and recruited Mariner Tower, which provided $200,000, toward the development of a cell tower, according to the Berkshire Eagle. MORE |

It could give you a jolt that would blow off a body part, one official said. Nevertheless, copper thieves cut into a 100-kilowatt line that powered the cell tower near Austin, Texas, using bolt cutters wrapped in electrical tape. It was early in the morning, December 10, when a group of people broke into a cell tower in eastern Travis County, Texas, successfully knocked out the power and used wrenches and ropes to make off with copper wiring, which now sells for $3.50 a pound, according to KVUE TV News in Austin, Tex.
