Taking Next Steps
By Steve Capper, Executive Director |

Greetings!
We have 3 grandchildren, and one that is due the day I’m writing this. My granddaughter in New York City, Addie, is 15 months old and has been walking since January. Our Houston granddaughter, Lily, is 18 months old. She climbs and crawls to play and explore, and she stands upright with ease; but in spite of instructions, modeling and encouragement from the adults in her life, she’s been reluctant to move into walking as her principle means of transportation.

Mark IS our elevator speech
By Jim Herrigton, Chairman of the MH Board |

The Mission Houston Board's communication team suggests that we develop an elevator speech. This is the speech that you make when you get on an elevator, someone asks you what you do, and you want to answer in a clear, concise and consistent manner. Getting the elevator speech done for Mission Houston has been a challenge, in part because, we want nothing less than the transformation of the entire greater Houston area. Since most folks don't have real life experience with transformation on this scope, getting the speech down to the amount of time that you could give to someone who was riding up on the elevator with you – well, it is a challenge.
But, the staff took the assignment seriously and has nearly finished. Our work in progress is at the end of this article. But, I was out running yesterday and remembered the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, and the face of Mark Day came to my mind. Mark IS our elevator speech.

100 Commitments in 100 Days |
 |
For nearly a decade, Mission Houston has plowed the ground for the whole Body of Christ to get mobilized into effective Kingdom service. In September we are implementing our most ambitious effort ever, and today I am writing to ask you to join us in praying for God to significantly enlarge both our volunteer and our donor base. Between June 1 and September 8, 2008, we are asking God to provide both 100 new volunteers and 100 new donors to seed this effort. We are calling this emphasis “100 Commitments in 100 Days”.
The volunteer base! Through the Whole and Healthy Children Initiative (WHC), we will be working with teams of volunteers in six communities to recruit 100 mentors for six schools, 100 intercessors for the mentors and the children they are mentoring, and a volunteer work force to do a campus improvement project at each school. This will be at least 1200 volunteers making weekly contributions plus the work teams. We are asking you to join us in asking God for 100 volunteers who will influence and recruit others - from their small group members, their office colleagues, or members of their Sunday School class - to join them in becoming one of the 1200 that are needed.
