Christmas is the celebration of God coming to earth as a person, born as a baby. The writer of the Gospel of John said it this way: “The Word of God came and dwelt among us!” That is what we want to see happen for at-risk students and their schools – God coming among them, “wrapped up” in caring Christians!
Our listening sessions with school administrators, teachers, veterans of ministries working with students in schools, and community leaders are almost over. We’ve been asking for their counsel about our call for the Christians of greater Houston to make a 7 year investment in transforming public school elementary schools. Their feedback helped us in determining several clear goals. While we’ll reach these through 1 year increments, here is what we want to see happen:
Any financial gift that you give to Mission Houston before the end of the year could result in leveraging that gift to double. A key business leader in the city has made a $50,000 dollar for dollar pledge. Every dollar we raise before the end of the year – up to $50,000 – he will match.
Educational Sector Initiative -
whole and healthy children
Mission Houston announced that it is launching an initiative called Whole and Healthy Children that will focus on
serving the educational sector of the greater Houston area. The initiative will focus on the transformation of the
education sector by catalyzing support for public schools that have the largest percentages of at-risk kids and insufficient resources.
The goal of the seven-year-initiative is to collaborate with individual believers, ministries, congregations and
existing service providers across the city to recruit and deploy 100 mentors for each of 135 schools and to raise at
least $10,000 for each school.
What is it that we are praying for?
We are asking God for nothing less than the spiritual and social transformation and revitalization of greater Houston - each person, neighborhood, and community.
