PRESS RELEASE
February 10, 2010
A lot of people with a LOT of heart....
Hearts For Haiti NL raises $38,000 for residents of Haiti!
Once again it has been shown that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador know how to respond when someone is hurting. Not long after the devastating earthquake reeked havoc on the lives of the people of Haiti people all over the province were seeking ways to help out.
From
a simple face book message, an idea grew to become a major undertaking
by the St. John's and area artistic community and allot of dedicated
volunteers. Everyone associated with HeartsForHaitiNL pulled together
in just nine days to put off a multi-day-event which raised $19,000.00
for Haitian relief projects. Matched by the federal government, that
means we collectively raised $38,000 for the residents of Haiti.
Indeed many people eagerly took parts large and small to make it the successful fundraiser it was. It began with a committee of folks who came together as a unit for the first time. Kathie Hicks and her whole crew of folks at Spirit of Newfoundland provided countless expertise and a venue to pull it all off. But as Kathie herself points it really was the larger community that made it work.
For example the Hearts For Haiti Relief Fund Committee
consisted of Michelle Stead -- Committee Chair, Brock Ballard --
Literary Talent, Jaime O'Leary -- Volunteer Coordinator, Keith Soper --
Media Relations, Deborah Wells Smith - Media Coordinator, Kirk Newhook
