"Thank you so much for everything that you did for me, and everyone else that is now in professional school because of the SUU Rural Health Scholars Program. I don't believe I would have ever made it into such an amazing institution without the help from RHS." -- Neil Hjorth, 2009 SUU Graduate and Creighton Pharmacy School Student |

56 SUU Students Accepted to Graduate Health Progams
SUU students hit another home run this year and our batting average is getting more impressive! Medical school admissions rose from 19 last year to 24, the largest group in SUU's history to matriculate to medical school. Twenty-four out of 25 medical school applicants were accepted. "But we are incredibly proud of the increased percentage of acceptances at the University of Utah," states Rita Osborn, director of SUU's Rural Health Scholars Program. This year the number of slots open to in-state students was reduced to 61 and SUU students garnered seven of those prized seats. "Our student's high acceptance rates come from a combination of academic excellence, great leadership, community service, research, patient exposure and job shadowing experiences," Osborn states.
Students attending the UofU are Rhett Smith (Beaver), Paul Johnson (Moab), Nick Behunin (Price), Ashley Crum (Cedar City), Daniel Garvin (Price), Derrick Gale (Cedar City) and Michael Pratt (Cedar City)
Other pre-professional students fared as well. Twelve of 12 were accepted into pharmacy programs, 11 of 14 to dental school, five of six to PA programs and the remainder are headed to optometry, physical therapy and chiropractic schools. The Southern Utah University Rural Health Scholars Program helps students become successful applicants to medical, dental, pharmacy and other graduate level health professions programs by building on the academic excellence of SUU. Student applications are strengthened through a regiment of classes, seminars, community service, job shadowing, research and advisement. There are 170 students enrolled in the program fall semester. |
