Greetings!
Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. This month's newsletter is a special dedication to my brother-in-law, John Dupnik, who will be leaving for Iraq on Wednesday the 13th to fight for our Country. He is a Staff Sergeant for the U.S. Marine Corps.
Along with the importance of fitness and nutrition, this newsletter is about the quality of life. |
| Finding the Value in Each Day |
|
| Inspired by the commitment and bravery of John Dupnik
I left town last week to spend some time with my brother-in-law before he leaves for 7 months in Iraq. We had such a great time together, laughing, crying, and deepening our bond. While I was spending time with him, I had moments where I would just look at him and admire him for the strength he has to be able to leave his home and his family (he is married to my sister and they have 3 precious daughters). Yet, not only does he have to leave his home, family, and the life he knows, he has to go to a foreign country. He has to work in 120 degree weather, live in a room the size of a jail cell, and sleep listening to bombs exploding around him. My admiration then deepened when he didn't complain, but talked about how good the food was, and tell funny stories about things he and the other marines did to kill time. He was able to find and appreciate the positive of what he had to do. This was a very eye opening moment.
I brought that experience back home with me, and I observed my campers. Many of them have lost loved ones in the recent months, yet they find the strength and the motivation to continue to attend camp and go about their regular regimen. It has opened my eyes to the fact that life is happening.
I tend to find myself stressed and worried about my campers results. Are they working hard enough and getting the most out of each workout? Are they eating right? Are they getting faster timed miles, and more push ups? Are they losing inches? While these are all very important factors, sometimes attending boot camp goes a lot deeper than that. It is important to feel stronger and leaner and more energetic. By attending camp, however, these campers are getting more out of life.
They take time in their day out by saying, "I'm important enough to take one hour to myself." They take that hour and strengthen their hearts, their muscles, and even their minds. They cheer each other on, and they walk off the court after every workout laughing. How many people really get all of that in by 6:30 in the morning, or end their day on such a high? They begin to develop friendships with each other, and anyone and everyone is included and just as important as the next camper. The morning group even took time on Saturday to go to lunch and a movie together...and everyone was invited. It's an honor to train such a committed group of people.
As a fitness trainer, I get so stressed and concerned about RESULTS and EFFORT. Well, I'm supposed to...it's my job! Yet, sometimes a camper may not have a good month, and it took everything she had to just make it to camp each day. Just being able to go to camp and be around other people that share her same goals and struggles, and make her laugh is enough to make her day better.
Finding the value in each day and in your life is what really matters. Understanding that life is happening around us. People are going to war, friends are losing loved ones, and everyone has their daily stresses. What's important is still seeing that each day counts, there's value in it, and you count. Make the most of each day!
Thank you, John Eric Dupnik, for having the courage and the commitment to fight for us! I will miss you, and while you are gone I will commit myself to making the most of each day.
