FEBRUARY 2012 NEWSLETTER

Greetings!

February is a hectic month for us--we're lucky 2012 is a leap year so we get an extra day.  People often assume summer is a busy time for a beverage company, but these next few weeks are when we finalize all of our new products and promotions for the year. We've been so busy that on February 2, Honest Tea's 14th birthday slipped by unobserved. But we hope no one forgets Valentine's Day, so if you're looking for a different way to enjoy cocoa with your valentine, pick up a bottle of Honest CocoaNova at your local Whole Foods Market, where it will be on sale through February 14th--you'll get that great cocoa taste without eating an entire box of candy.  Better yet, buy two and share!

Honestly yours,

ALOHA PEARFECT WHITE & SUBLIME MATE--WE'LL
pearfect & sublime
MISS YOU!

Aloha means hello, goodbye, welcome, farewell, and love. And it's an elegant way to bid farewell to our beloved Pearfect White and Sublime Mate. We aren't going to be making these beverages any longer, so check with your favorite store manager to stock up while you can!  While these are two irreplaceable varieties, we suggest trying Mango White, Green Dragon, or Heavenly Lemon Tulsi if you're seeking something new. We never say goodbye when we retire varieties--we prefer "Aloha."

Seth wrote a blog on Inc.com titled "I Love You, You're Fired," where he says "Aside from firing an employee, firing a product is the worst part of my job. And yet at this time of year, we face our annual cycle of terminating underperforming varieties."  To read more about the process of creating and retiring our beverages, click on the link:  http://www.inc.com/seth-goldman/i-love-you-youre-fired.html.

Q& A WITH CHERYL, VP & DEPUTY CHIEF OF MISSION

    cheryl bottle cap

*What is a mission-driven business?A mission-driven business has an inherent social benefit THAT allows consumers to use their purchasing power to make a difference.  At Honest Tea, we think of it as our  'Mission In A Bottle"- we offer healthy, organic, lower sugar beverages, bringing organics to more people and increasing the demand for organic agriculture.  Our Fair Trade Certified™ teas direct funds to the communities that supply our tea.

*What do you do at Honest Tea?  I help the company address all the different ways our products and our work impact our mission.  My tasks involve everything from identifying how we re-purpose spent tea leaves to coordinating Fair Trade projects with our supplier communities to analyzing the recycling stream of kids pouches. I also work with our non-profit, for-profit and government partners to learn how we can expand and enhance our mission around the world as well as within the company.

*What drives you in this role?  I'm passionately interested in how the decisions we make today affect the future.  I believe that we have a responsibility to leave a place better than we found it - whether it's the park where we picnic or the planet where we live.  It's challenging in almost every part of life to balance achieving short-term goals with the necessarily long-term approach that sustainability planning demands, but I'm always up for a challenge.

*Favorite HONEST beverage:  It's a tie!  Just Green and Heavenly Lemon Tulsi.

TURN IT ON, TURN IT UP

PERFECT PAIRING FOR VALENTINE'S DAY!

Ever look at your HONEST bottle and think of all the great foods that go with it?  Our friend Aviva Goldfarb, author of The Six O'Clock Scramble cookbooks, has a recipe for "Caramelized Onion and Portobello Mushroom Pizza" that we think is a perfect complement to a bottle of Half & Half.  Share your favorite pairing with our online

Caramelized Onion, Mushroom &

Goat Cheese Pizza

 aviva pizza

Prep + Cook = 30 minutes, 8 servings

1 Tbsp. olive oil

1 small yellow onion, halved top to bottom and thinly sliced

6 oz. portobello mushroom caps, coarsely chopped

1 cup tomato sauce or red pasta sauce

2 whole wheat or white thin pre-baked pizza crusts (10 oz. each)

1 tsp. dried basil

1 tsp. dried oregano

2 - 4 oz. crumbled goat cheese, or fresh mozzarella cheese

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. In a large heavy skillet, heat the oil over medium heat, and add the onions. Sauté them for 2 - 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to brown. Add the mushrooms and sauté for about 5 more minutes until the mushrooms begin to get dark and tender.

Meanwhile, spread 1/2 cup tomato sauce on each pizza crust, nearly to the edges. Top each with basil and oregano, followed by the mushrooms, onions, and cheese. Bake the pizzas directly on the oven rack for 10 minutes. Allow them to cool for about 2 minutes before slicing them with a pizza cutter.

Serve the pizzas with crushed red pepper flakes, if desired.
