A new study from the University of L'Aquila in Italy has found a delicious way to get heart healthy - black tea! At Honest Tea headquarters, you'll find a fridge stocked with our many varieties of organic, lower sugar Honest beverages - but the one that we're seeing on many desks this summer definitely seems to be our Mate line! If you haven't tried it yet, here are a few fun facts that have us craving mo' mate all the time:

THE APPLE OF OUR EYE

Once upon a time, there were three delicious, certified organic Honest Kids thirst quenchers made especially for Honest Kids aged 2 to 92. But Berry Berry Good Lemonade, Goodness Grapeness, and Tropical Tango Punch felt that something was missing - so they asked Honest Kids to create a fourth flavor just in time for back-to-school. Joining them in the playground is Appley Ever After, an organic apple thirst quencher that will tickle your taste buds and has about 1/2 the sugar of other kids' drinks. Thanks to Coral Aponte (our ultimate Honest Kid) and Randy Grazio (our ultimate Honest Kid at heart) for submitting the winning name chosen from hundreds of online submissions. MAKING A DENT IN SUSTAINABILITY

We've been getting a lot of questions about our new PET bottle (on the left), which uses 22% less plastic than our previous bottle. Some consumers wondered why there is a large "hollow" space underneath the bottle - they worried that we might be trying to sell air - like those snack bags that are puffed up but only have about 4 chips inside. The challenge with the new, thinner bottle is that it has a higher risk of getting dented. In fact, this was a real problem that forced us to redesign the bottle. To help keep its shape, the inside must be under pressure. When the bottle is filled with hot tea, the liquid expands and the plug on the bottom pops out. (If you squeeze real hard, you can make this happen.) Then as the tea cools, the plug pops back in and creates the pressure on the inside that prevents the bottles from being damaged. The thinner plastic means we needed more pressure and hence the bigger plug. There really is 16.9 oz. inside and we aren't trying to pull a fast one. Rest assured - not only are you getting exactly the same amount (16.9oz) of delicious Honest Tea and Ade, you are helping take 1,000,000 lbs of plastic out of the production stream and lightening our truckloads by 500 lbs apiece! We're sorry about the confusion and thanks for keeping us Honest. We'll be inserting a message in the next label run that helps explain the purpose of the bottle design.

TURNING TRASH TO TREASURE

Honest Tea's journey toward sustainability just moved closer to home - right in our kitchen! In our Bethesda, Md. headquarters, we are now composting. Each week, we collect an average of three gallons of biodegradable waste. With the help of Sweetgreen, a local restaurant certified by the Green Restaurant Association, and Envirelation, a composting transportation service, the collected waste is given to local composting facilities and farms where about 90 days later, it can be used to amend the soil, and in some cases, even be used for bioremediation of contaminated soil. Composting not only decreases the amount of waste we put into landfills, but it also lowers the amount of methane gas that is released when waste decomposes underground. Not to mention, it makes a healthy treat for summer tomatoes. Composting is one reason we love our neighbors at Sweetgreen. Another good reason is that they have great salads and they sell only Honest Tea, Honest Ade and water! |
OUR CONSUMERS OF THE MONTH

From "across the pond," we received an email too good not to share. With a short supply of Honest Tea at Sarah's commissary in Germany, she finds herself "scowling at other's grocery carts when the shelf is bare and someone has a cart full of tea." So when she sees other "known drinkers" in the produce aisle, she diverts straight to "her tea" which leads to the following exchange of pleasantries:
"I see they HAD Honest Tea today."
Nervous glance at all those bottles..."They did..." (Bite lip).
"There are a couple of Greens left if you hurry."
"I only drink Peach."
"Would you like one?" as I look at my bakers' dozen. (Withering looks in my direction)
"I'll go check the refrigerated case."
Thinking to myself..................... "Oh, I cleaned that out first."
Even though Sarah enjoys the spoils of her Honest Tea victory, we applaud her for sharing the wealth and offering a consolation bottle to any disappointed fellow shopper.
