Greetings!
Well it looks like we finally have summer and with any luck it will last more than a week. The news is filled with lots of negative information about how bad things are. The truth is that we are one of the strongest parts of the country by economy and especially our real estate. We have jobs and people still moving into this area to fill them, interest rates are still low and our real estate prices are adjusting to the marketplace. There are still buyers buying and sellers willing to make deals. I have lots of statistics and stories to share with you if you want more proof. Stand-by because I, like many others, believe that another great round of buying and selling is just around the corner. Yours truly,
Patricia Wangsness

On a personal note: Two weeks ago we put our 12 year old Labrador retriever, Maki, to sleep. He had a great life and was a lovable and memorable member of the family. Maki did his job of guarding and was a wonderful companion until the very end. Many of you knew Maki and most of you have heard me talk about him and our other dog, Striker. We had to put Striker to sleep in October, so our recent loss seems a little harder. We can learn so much from our pets but the most memorable is not to take ourselves too seriously and make the most of every day we are here!

Changes to NWMLS: By the Numbers
I've been following the real estate market with this newsletter since last year. The NWMLS has taken a dramatic step in the last two weeks to change the way properties are viewed on the NWMLS and the public websites. It is not clear why they have done this, but it makes the month-to-month figures I have given you less useful for comparison purposes.

10 close-to-home summer vacations in Washington
OK, so gas prices are galloping toward $4.50 a gallon. The only thing more painful than a long, out-of-state driving vacation this summer would be - all seats upright! - a flying vacation.
Here's a list of 10 close-to-home getaways for your own (short) summer road trip.
- Mount Rainier: Hike, take a nature walk, climb, go bird-watching or just take a scenic drive and appreciate the regional icon up close.
- Olympic National Park: A nature's paradise of world-class trails, glacier-capped peaks, mossy rainforests, wild ocean beaches, waterfalls, lakes and rivers and a variety of flora and fauna.
- Yakima: Wine. More than 60 wineries. Outdoor recreation, especially fly-fishing, is popular here, too. The valley gets more than 300 days of sunshine a year.
- Port Townsend:The historic Victorian seaport on the Quimper Peninsula may be best known for its annual film festival (Sept. 26-28), but there's a nonstop schedule of art and music events throughout the summer.
- Lake Chelan: Scenery, water sports and wine. Canoe, parasail, scuba dive, water ski or wakeboard. Fishing is big, for chinook and lake trout. More than a dozen wineries surround the 55-mile-long lake.
- Methow Valley: A 200-kilometer trail system set amid breathtaking scenery. The rural towns of Winthrop, Twisp and Mazama offer charming accommodations and access to extensive trails that bring out cross-country skiers in winter and hikers and cyclists in summer.
- Bellingham:Nearby Mount Baker, and the busy college town on the bay beneath it. Many hiking trails, short or as strenuous as your lungs can take. You can camp, bike, fish, bird-watch, canoe, raft or swim around here.
- Long Beach Peninsula:The ocean! And a 28-mile stretch of beach that makes (debatable) claims at being the world's longest. An eclectic mix of funky old beach cottages, modern condos and vintage hotels.
- Leavenworth: These hills are alive with Bavarian-flavored charm, chalets and festivals, but it's the ambience of the Cascade Mountain trails, lakes and streams that attracts most summertime tourists.
- San Juan Islands: Wildlife, hikes, whale-watching, gourmet restaurants, B&Bs, all reachable via a scenic cruise aboard a Washington State ferry.
