July 31-August 3 | Bakersfield, CA
AHH Tunes logo
It'll be a HOT time in Bakersfield soon - and we're not talking about the weather!

Your Region 11 Seminar Steering Committee (headed by Bea Knaapen) and your hostess chorus, Agoura Hills Harmony, are putting the final touches on another great Summer Sizzler! This year's seminar is called, "AHHtunes - Music to My Ears"!!

As the only educational seminar in 2008 (remember, there is no Fall Festival this year), you don't want to miss this!
  • Guest faculty members will be Ase Hagerman and Sandy Robinson Marron.

Ase is the former director of Sweden's Sunlight Chorus, a multi-time Top 10 International Chorus, and is now the director of Alba Chorus, last year's Small Chorus Champions at IES. Alba Chorus If you haven't been to one of Ase's rhythm classes, your hips ain't seen nothin' yet!

Sandy is the director of the 2008 International 3rd Place Medalists, Lion's Gate Chorus. Lion's Gate Chorus  She is also the tenor of 2005 International Quartet Champions, Brava!  Our own International 9th Place Medalist, Shimmer!, coaches with Sandy and they just RAVE about her!
  • Don't miss this year's Novice Quartet Contest on Friday night. Grab 3 friends and try quarteting! Or come and cheer for your favorite quartet!
  • The Winners' Circle Show is always a highlight of our Summer Sizzler, and this year is no exception. This show is jam-packed with terrific performers -- see our Hawaii competitors: Channelaire, Voices Unlimited, Spirit, and Shimmer! Back for a reunion is West Side Story, our 1993 Region 11 Quartet Champions. And you'll enjoy special guest performers, Ready, Willing and Mabel, featuring Region 11 directors, Caroline McLean and Jim Campbell. Check out their website: Ready, Willing and Mabel
  • After the show, join us around the pool for the "AHH-loha Glowa" afterglow. $20 for dinner, dessert and a free margarita; $10 for dessert only; and no charge just to come and enjoy the party (no food).

If you missed signing up with your chorus, come to Bakersfield and register at the DoubleTree!!!

"How to Sponsor a YWIH Festival" -
don't miss this class at Summer Sizzler!
YWIH
Someone has suggested that your chorus consider putting on a YWIH festival! Great idea!

But your "one night a week" at chorus has turned into more like three or four between all of the related activities, right? The last thing you really want to do is more footwork to get a festival off the ground. It is a wonderful idea but it feels like "one more thing" on your already full plate.

On the other hand, you know that you would accomplish a number of objectives that you are already working on like:
  • Increasing the amount of publicity for your chorus
  • Increasing community awareness
  • Increasing your membership (including younger members)
  • Increasing your chorus' revenue
AND
  • Giving the chorus another place to perform with a great audience
Well, what if you had it all laid out for you so that you did not have to start from scratch? What if you had support from those who have "been there-done that"?

You do!

On Sunday morning during Summer Sizzler, Karen Ridout, "Diva Day" Chair for Harborlites Chorus and Membership Coordinator for Region 21, will be showing us how an individual chorus (or more than one) can sponsor and coordinate a YWIH workshop or other event. With over 250 annual participants in their "Diva Day", the event has had great success for the past several years.

Please let us know if you (or someone from your chorus) will attend the class by simply replying to kira.wagner@gmail.com.

You will walk away totally prepared to take advantage of all of the opportunities Karen will share with us.

In harmony,

Kira Wagner

Do you want to learn more about our judging categories? Our music? Planning rehearsals? Our organization?

The Director Certification Program (DCP) has it all! Anyone can apply to participate - you don't have to be a director, assistant director, or even an aspiring director. The program is helpful for section leaders, quartet members, and riser singers, too!

To get the application form, go to: http://www.sweetadelineintl.org/forms.cfm#music

Under Music Services, click on DPC Application. Or... e-mail me
at elkhippo@embarqmail.com.

See you in August!

Most Underused Marketing Tool...
E-mail Signatures
E-mail symbolAdapted from an article by
Nancy Schwartz, Founder/President
and Publisher, Getting Attention

Email signatures (a.k.a. sig lines) are powerful, low-cost, high-return marketing tools (a virtual business card or ad) for your chorus. What's interesting is how seldom sig lines are used.

Consider this: If your chorus has 30 members, each of whom sends 15 emails daily, then (assuming 250 business days) that's 112,500 business cards or ads distributed annually, at no cost. If you have 100 members, that's 375,000 cards or ads annually.

What Is an Email Signature?

In general, your email signature is information automatically added as the last few lines of your outgoing email to let people know who/where/what you are. Consider your sig line as your online business card with "callback" abilities.

Here are a few examples:

What a Strong Email Signature Does for Your Chorus

Making the most of your sig lines, for yourself and every member of your chorus, is analogous to leaving your business cards -- but even more powerful.

Most importantly, in this age when we're all inundated with too many emails, your email signature is a clear signal to your recipient that the message is from you and provides the context (e.g., job title, organization name, and web site) that reminds that person who you are and enriches their understanding of your message. That's a lot more than can quickly be deciphered from your email address in the "from" field.

Beyond this most basic benefit, your email signature is a business card or ad that alerts the recipient to special news and enables them to have direct access to your web site or send email back to you with the swift click of a mouse.

How to Create an Effective Email Sig Line

First of all, keep it brief. A general rule of thumb is that a good sig line is 4-6 lines in length. Eight lines is the maximum length, but that is pushing it. Remember, those to whom you email frequently see your email signature line again and again.

Musts include:
  • Name
  • Title, if any
  • Chorus name
  • Phone number
  • Chorus web address
Optional elements include:
  • Tagline (organizational or specific event, campaign, etc.
  • Graphical elements such as a horizontal line to distinguish your sig line from the rest of the email.
Inclusion of your email address is not necessary, since it's in the "from" field of the email and gets forwarded with an email that's passed on. Best to drive audiences to your web site for more contact information details.

Adding Your Sig Line to Your Emails

Once you've decided on sig line content and format, you'll need to add it to your email program. Check your email program's HELP menu and search for "signatures". You should be able to find some information there about how to set one up on your program.

Having trouble seeing the graphics?

Each of the articles above has a photo or graphic image with it. There are also several links within articles.

If you cannot see the graphics -- or if you don't see a big graphic at the top of this newsletter that says "Marketing Minute", check to see if you have a button or link at the top of your e-mail that says "Show Pictures" or "Download Pictures" (or something similar) -- clicking that should allow you to see all the graphics!

If you have any comments, suggestions, or have marketing you'd like to share with the region in the next "Marketing Minute", please send them to me!
