How Stressors Affect the Adrenals and Contribute to Fatigue and Pre-Mature Aging
When a person is stressed, the body reacts by mounting a stress response through the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. This is also called the "fight or flight" response as the body arms itself to face what it perceives as a danger. When this happens, several hormones are released through out the system including cortisol, an adrenal and age promoting hormone.
When a person experiences chronic prolonged stress, cortisol levels may rise to such a high level that the adrenal becomes exhausted. At the same time, DHEA, a hormone produced in the adrenal glands that promotes youth and longevity, will start to decrease.
This is the body's way of ensuring that we can cope with the on-going stress that threatens our survival.
When cortisol is high & DHEA is low the following can happen:
1. Reduced insulin sensitivity, reduced glucose utilization, and increased blood sugar, which leads to diabetes and pre-mature aging. 2. Reduced immune system activity. This leads to increased chances of getting infections such as Herpes, yeast overgrowth, and viral infections. 3. Increased loss in bone mass, as calcium absorption is blocked. The demineralization of bone occurs, leading to osteoporosis. 4. Increased fat accumulation around the waist and protein breakdown, thus leading to muscle wasting, an inability to reduce weight. 5. Increased water and salt retention, leading to high blood pressure at first, with low blood pressure as the condition worsens. 6. Estrogen dominance, leading to PMS, uterine fibroids, and breast cancer.
With any anti-aging program, establishing optimal adrenal health and keeping cortisol/DHEA levels in optimal range is paramount!
