Pain Relief & Acupuncture: A Natural Fit
Dr. Harry Shao, DC, LAc, NCCAOM
Joy of Raphael
Acupuncture has been utilized for thousands of years for a wide range of pain conditions, such as postoperative dental pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, low-back pain, menstrual cramps, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, and tennis elbow.
Acupuncturists: Pain Relieving Professionals
A special analysis of acupuncture data from an earlier NHIS found that pain or musculoskeletal complaints accounted for 7 of the top 10 conditions for which people use acupuncture. Back pain was the most common, followed by joint pain, neck pain, severe headache/migraine, and recurring pain. Acupuncture, by stimulating specific points on the body by inserting thin needles through the skin, regulates the flow of qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians. During my years of practice, I have found that the blockage of the qi could be from: tight muscles, fibrotic tissues, scar tissues caused by previous injuries, adhesions between the normal tissues and fibrotic and scar tissues and a common cause is mental stress caused by daily life especially in women.
Acupuncture can help most pain, often very rather quickly. However, in order to rid the pain completely, finding the source of the pain is critical.
Headache Pain
Many people experience headaches in their forehead or pain behind eyes. Often, patients will assume they have a sinus headache and start taking over the counter medications for pain or sinus infections. However, in many cases the headache is actually from the cervical nerves being pinched by the hardened suboccipitals muscle group. These small muscles are usually overused and tightened by bad posture with head looking down. To thoroughly treat these headaches (cervicogenic headaches) it is crucial to relive the tension on the muscle group and other related cervical muscles. Acupuncture, cupping and other myofascial teniques combined with proper corrections of the head posture have proven to be extremely effective therapies. Most of my patients have no recurring headaches after simply one session of treatment and by following my home care instructions. I always believe there is source for the cause of everything. And it's the practitioners' job to find the cause and eliminate it for their patients. I told my patients," I am the investigator, the detective of your body". To relieve the pain is just the beginning; to prevent the pain from coming back is of utmost importance. To live a pain free life is everyone's dream, but to achieve it will require both the patients and practitioners efforts.

Pain: Why Do We Suffer?
Linda Dugger, MT
Massage Therapist
Joy of Raphael
The Weekend Warrior
Many injuries occur during a weekend or after work sport activity because that person was not conditioned to play that sport. I have had numerous clients come to see me for injuries related to a Sunday baseball game, vacation volleyball, after work get-together basketball - you get the picture.
Improper Conditioning
Many of these injuries can be reduced by properly conditioning. Proper stretching before and after playing is very important. What also helps is partaking in a fair amount of exercise. The degree of exercise depends on the degree of play you choose. Activites such as walking, riding a bike, yoga and weight lifting on a regular basis can help you to avoid pain. A personal trainer can help you set a program.
Opps - Accidents
Some years ago I fell out of the attic and sevely injured my arm. Don't ask. I simpy could not raise my right arm - not helpful when one is a massage therapist! However, being a massage therapist I immediately began doing some tissue release on myself, used some essential oils, and cautiously began rotating the joint. It was slow going but eventually I was able to raise my arm.
Poor Posture & Poor Body Mechanics
They way you stand, sit, walk, work, and play can contribute to eventually feeling pain. Your spine is the main support for your body and when it gets stressed so does the rest of your body.
Do yourself a favor and be proactive. Watch your back. Know that massage is helpful for injuries but more pleasurable when received as maintenance rather than just a fix-it!
