Estrogen Dominance: Things Every Woman Needs to Know

by: By Carolyn Berghuis, MS, ND, CTN
Wellness Director: Joy of Raphael

Just what is estrogen?
Estrogens, as a group, promote cell proliferation. i.e. they make things grow.  They stimulate the uterine lining in preparation for pregnancy, prompt breast tissue growth, stimulate the menstrual cycle, and initiate the bodily changes that occur at puberty. However, if estrogen is left unchecked, cells can multiply in an unpredictable way, in some cases leading to cancer. The most commonly discussed estrogens are estrone, estradiol, and estriol.

Estrogen dominance
When an excess of any hormone exists, an imbalance develops, and health problems can arise. When there is too much estrogen and not enough progesterone to counteract its effects, the situation is called estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance is caused by exposure to excess environmental xenoestrogens, use of synthetic estrogens like birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy, anovulation (i.e., lack of ovulation during menstrual cycle, which is not uncommon among women older than 35), digestive issues, unrelenting stress (which strains the adrenals and the thyroid), poor diet, and negative lifestyle factors (including smoking).

How does estrogen dominance specifically alter women's health? It has been linked to a wide range of conditions, including PMS, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis. In addition, numerous studies demonstrate that excess estrogen can cause breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers (which are all considered estrogen-dependent cancers), and cervical dysplasia, a precancerous condition characterized by abnormal changes to cervical tissues.

The connection between excess estrogen and certain cancers is clear. Harmful estrogens are difficult to detoxify in the liver (especially if the liver is already over worked) and are stored in fat. In a recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers linked obesity to breast cancer. Women with a higher body mass index (BMI), which equated to higher levels of body fat, also had elevated levels of hormones, particularly estradiol, which is the most potent of the estrogens produced in the body. The researchers concluded, "The increase in breast cancer risk with increasing BMI among postmenopausal women is largely the result of the associated increase in estrogens, particularly bioavailable estradiol."

According to a study featured in Cancer Causes and Control, women can reduce their breast cancer risk by maintaining a normal weight, because that reduces the amount of hormones stored in fat.

"Spirit as a science is an art unplayed. Spirit is not a confined space upon anything written, but what has yet to be written." - Julie Metallic

Julie founded Raphael's Touch Technique (RTT), a medically intuitive approach that utilizes sight-touch radar for present systemic body of knowledge. Knowledge is used for an individualistic touch to the gateway meridian for energy alignment, release, and well being. RTT is a combination of various techniques such as gifted insight, acupressure, applied kinesiology, cranial sacral pressure for emotional release, allergy elimination techniques, reflexology, lymphatic drainage and elements from the earth.
Julie has spent the last decade of her life developing and perfecting RTT, working on her writings (which include 10 books involving the spirit) all in an attempt to be a conduit for Godly healing. She has researched the effects upon various illnesses and has concluded such benefits to appear phenomenal.
Julie's gift allows her to "see" illnesses that have either formed or will be formed. RTT combines energy science and spirituality as it offers a heavenly experience. Clients describe the experience as gentle, non abrasive, completely relaxing and enjoyable.

Relaxation: the "Missing Link" of Wellness

by: Anna Greeley
Massage Therapist: Joy of Raphael

One of the most common roadblocks to wellness we experience in this age of technology and information is our inability to slow down and relax.  The pace of society seems to require us to "Go, Go, Go!" and the flow of demands is fierce.  How can we step back and give ourselves the permission and tools we need to relax?

One of the things I have found helpful in my own wellness practice is to take up habits that are non-mechanized or that require me to be outdoors.  Chopping vegetables by hand, riding my bicycle to work, hanging laundry on a line to dry, and even mowing my lawn all induce a state of meditation that is easily attained.  Books like Chop Wood, Carry Water by Rick Fields and The Simple Living Guide  by Janet Luhrs describe the ways that attention, focus, and acceptance can transform everyday chores into self-contained spiritual experiences.

The practice of brewing and drinking hot or cold herbal infusions is helpful, too.  Both decadent and relaxing, the benefits in the infusion go beyond the immediate and work with your body gently to heal, transform, and strengthen.  Imagine you own a beautiful teapot that you only use to pamper yourself.  You boil water, prepare the loose leaves of the tea, and pour the water over them into the teapot.  Fragrances of chamomile, lemon balm, mint, cinnamon, or licorice begin to swirl in air around your head.  When it is done, you take a cup out on the back porch and spend the time it takes to drink it in quiet contemplation of your garden or the sunset.

Rituals like these rarely take more than ten minutes, but they inject considerable amounts of peace and relaxation into the day.

Wellness is more than the sum of its parts.  Far too often, we concentrate on diet or exercise or reducing symptoms, without giving sleep, relaxation and stress reduction the attention they deserve.  It can be hard to stop moving, breathe deeply, and let go.  It can be easier to accept simply being sick or in pain, rather than give ourselves permission to relax and become well.

Relaxation is what I like to call the "missing link" in wellness.  Because it is hard to define and often passive, it can be difficult to make a part of daily life, or even to learn how to do it at all.

We offer a wonderful massage here at Joy of Raphael that can help ease you into this important practice of relaxation, called the Detox Anti-Stress massage.  Most massages can induce a state of relaxation, but I like this one especially well because it utilizes many modalities to ensure activation of the parasympathetic (calm/rest) nervous system, while balancing the sympathetic (fight/flight) nervous system.  It leaves the client feeling light, balanced, awake, and aware, while flushing toxins from the body with light lymphatic drainage.  This massage can also improve immune function and help achieve restful sleep.  As a massage therapist, I can help you ease back into your body and remind you that it is safe and beneficial to breathe deeply and relax.
