Osteoporosis & Decaying Jaw Bone Dangers*

By: Dr.Carolyn Berghuis, MS, ND, CTN
Wellness Director: Joy of Raphael

Have you heard the term "Fossy Jaw"?  Perhaps not, and hopefully you won't.  Fossy Jaw is a term many dentists have coined to describe a rotting and decaying jaw bone which resulted from the use of a bisphosphonate class of drugs such as Fosamax and Boniva.

How could this be?  The drugs that are designed to prevent bone breakdown are actually causing bone to rot and decay?

Jawbone death related to bisphosphonate class of drugs (Fosamax and Boniva), or Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ), is a serious condition that is difficult for oral surgeons to treat.  BRONJ was reported by oral surgeons in 2003 and a warning of BRONJ was issued for the entire class of these drugs in 2005.  Have you heard about it?  My guess is no.

So what can we do to protect ourselves from osteoporosis and fossy jaw?

Lots!  Several natural approaches available to you not only support healthy bone formation, they have wonderful "side benefits" for you to enjoy!  Let's explore.

1) Maintain a healthy balance of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fats in your diet.  Fatty acids are required for calcium to not only enter the bone, they are required for calcium to stay in the bone.
2) Ensure you have adequate vitamin K in your diet.  Vitamin K and fatty acids work together to form the "glue" that holds calcium in your bone structure.
3) Get enough vitamin D.  This "sunshine" vitamin helps your body absorb calcium.
4) Support healthy digestion.  Sufficient hydrochloric acid is required to digest calcium and other minerals.  Those on acid blocking medication are at a significant disadvantage here.
5) Avoid calcium products from the drug or grocery stores.  More than likely that don't contain the mineral balance your body needs to absorb calcium.  On top of that, they tend to contain the cheapest, least absorbable form of calcium which is almost impossible for the body to assimilate and digest.
6) Include the proper calcium supplement for your body into your daily program.  Standard Process offers several calcium supplements to choose from.  This vast selection allows us to select the perfect supplement to support your unique biochemistry.
6) Weight bearing exercise is a must.  During this type of exercise chemical messengers that signal the body to build new bone are created and released.
7) Remember, you are a unique individual and your nutritional needs are very different than your friends.  What is right for one person will not work for another - even if they have the same medical condition or diagnosis.  In my opinion, self diagnosing and self treating with supplements are akin to representing yourself in court.  Something most of us would never consider!  Consult with an Alternative Practitioner you trust to guide you down your Optimal Wellness path and your body will give you endless gratitude.

Swedish Massage vs. Deep Tissue Massage
by: Heather Ellis
Massage Therapist: Joy of Raphael

Stressed out?  Tired, achy muscles?  Wanting a massage but not sure which would be more beneficial? The two most commonly offered massages for muscle manipulation are Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage.

Swedish Massage
Swedish massage just feels GREAT. It is a technique that is designed to relax muscles, increase circulation, and facilitate the removal of toxins from the body. During this massage the practitioner uses long, slow strokes, and kneading to induce the client into a deep state of relaxation. Swedish is a wonderful massage for those that are overstressed and overworked, which includes almost everyone. This massage will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue massage is quickly becoming more popular than the Swedish due to its benefits. This massage is aimed at the deeper muscle tissue, using penetrating finger pressure on contracted areas.  Deep tissue can be helpful in relieving acute and chronic aches and pains. Sufferers of Fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, and carpal tunnel are finding Deep Tissue massage to be quite therapeutic. With deep tissue massage practitioner will at times, need to use a great deal of pressure in specific areas to help alleviate muscle tightness and "knots." Be sure to keep an open line of communication with your therapist, the treatment might be uncomfortable at times, but it should never be painful.

As with any massage, make sure that you drink lots and lots of water before and after your massage. Your body will be busy trying to rid itself of toxins, so you will want to be hydrated to help flush them out
