Including Healthy Fats Just Isn't Enough to Avoid Pain and Inflammation

by: Dr. Carolyn Berghuis, MS, ND, CTN
Wellness Director: Joy of Raphael

Major increases in heart disease and depression have occurred in the United States over the past 80 years.  During this time a major shift in the types of fats we eat has occurred.  Now even medical experts are sounding like myself and my fellow holistically minded medical colleagues when they state that the more omega-6 fats you eat compared to omega-3 fats, the more likely you are to suffer from heart disease and depression.

An article in Psychosomatic Medicine (March 30, 2007) states that people who eat high amounts of omega-6 fats are much more likely to have inflammation-promoting compounds in their blood.  These compounds, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6, are linked directly to heart disease, type diabetes, arthritis, depression, and other ailments.

But you can't just continue with your regular diet, take an omega-3 supplement (like cod liver oil or fish oil), and think that everything will be O.K.  Although taking these can help, the single greatest cause of this mess has been the introduction and massive consumption of processed foods containing refined vegetable oils (trans fats and partially-hydrogenated vegetable oils.)   I am talking about the thousands of bottles of salad dressing and cooking oil found shelf after shelf in your supermarkets and restaurant tables.  Making matters worse is the fact that these oils have a "half life" of 51 days - meaning that 51 days after consuming that trans fat or partially-hydrogenated fat, half of it's negative effects will be in your body 51 days later.  In another 51 days, you will be experiencing twenty-five percent of it's negative potency - yeiks!

These oils are also found by the truckload on your market's margarine shelves.  All the sweets, refined foods, snack foods, and baked goods you love to eat and serve your family are also loaded with them.  They are easy to produce, have an extremely long shelf life, are easy to cook with, and look beautiful - a virtual liquid plastic.  They are a dream come true for agribusiness and the giant processed food industry.

Out of Balance
In the old days, before the major health shift towards heart disease and depression, the ratio of omega-6 fats to omega-3 fats in the diet was somewhere between 1:1 to 3:1.  Today it is more like 20:1 and even 50:1 for some typical American families.  And taking a tablespoon of fish oil daily is good, but it will not tip the scales back toward normal.

Remember, the higher your intake of certain types of omega-6 fats, the higher the poisons in your blood.  And it is the synthetic versions of these fats found in processed foods that are the culprits.  It is not the omega-6 fats from meats (unless fried) and whole foods.  In fact, you need omega-6 fats.  Without some of these you cannot even utilize omega-3 fats.  But get your omega-6 fats from real foods, not liquid plastic.

I can't remember when my protocol for any patient did not include a diet that was more balanced between omega-6 and omega-3.  And it has been very rare over the past 15 years, and thousands of patients, that I did not find that an omega-3 supplement was eventually needed in every program.  Today, even medical experts agree that balance needs to be restored.

THE BENEFITS OF ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential Oils are extracts from the plant fluids that maintain plant life. These fluids and move through the plant's circulatory system in the leaves, stems, roots, and flowers, carrying nutrition to the plant cells and carrying waste products out, just as human blood functions in the body. Because essential oils are composed of the tiniest of organic molecules they can pass through cell walls and membranes delivering therapeutic benefits, not only to the plants that create them, but to people as well.

Essential oils have a chemical structure similar to that found in human cells and tissues. This makes essential oils compatible with human proteins, enables them to be readily identified and accepted by the body and they are so small in molecular size that they penetrate the tissues of the skin. Essential oils are lipid soluble and are capable of penetrating cell walls and can affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes and are metabolized like other nutrients. Essential oils contain oxygen molecules, which help transport nutrients to cells. Since nutrient deficiency = oxygen deficiency, disease begins when cells lack oxygen for proper nutrient assimilation. By providing oxygen, essential oils work to stimulate the immune system and regenerate damaged tissue. Essential oils are powerful natural substances that create an unfriendly environment for free radicals.

Essential oils promote physical, emotional and spiritual well being. Essential oils may also combat infectious disease by killing viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. They have been shown to destroy bacteria and viruses while simultaneously restoring physiological balance to the body. Essential oils have a bioelectrical frequency that is several times greater the frequency of herbs, food and even the human body. Clinical research has shown that essential oils can quickly raise the frequency of the human body, restoring it to its normal, healthy levels.

 Raindrop

by: Katie Miller
Practice Administrator: Joy of Raphael

Raindrop Therapy Massage originated in the 1980s from the research of Dr. Gary Young working with a Lakota medicine man named Wallace Black Elk. This therapy utilizes the power of essential oils in bringing the body into structural and electrical alignment.

Raindrop Therapy Massage uses a sequence of essential oils that are immune enhancing, support the body's natural defenses, as well as the circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, digestive, nervous, and other body systems. These oils, which are high in antioxidants, are also mood elevating and antiseptic, creating an unfavorable environment for harmful viruses and bacteria that can hibernate in the body. Essential oils are known to boost stamina and energy, help you relax, help manage stress and frustration and promote overall health, vitality, and longevity.

Your session will last an hour and the benefits may continue to work in your body for up to one week following a Raindrop Therapy Massage.
