Osteoporosis Drugs: FDA Warning
by: Dr. Carolyn Berghuis, MS, ND, CTN
Wellness Director: Joy of Raphael
It has been know for some time now that biophosphonate (osteoporosis) drugs have serious side effects and further, no long-term studies have been conducted that actually show their efficacy. These drugs do nothing to support the formation of new, strong bone. Rather, they interfere with the breakdown and re-absorption of old and disesed bone. In previous Joy of Raphael e-newsletters I shared with you the fact that these drugs could cause permanent jawbone decay. Check out this YouTube Jaw Death video to learn more about Fossy Jaw.
Now (finally) the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is getting involved. Aside from the permanent jawbone rot that can accompany the use of these drugs, the FDA reports that these drugs can cause "severe, incapacitating bone, joint, and/or musculoskeletal pain." Further, the FDA adds that the association between these problems and biophosphonate drugs is often overlooked by physicians, "delaying diagnosis, and prolonging pain and/or impairment."
The FDA alert, years too late in my opinion, applies to all biophosphonate drugs, including Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, Aredia, and Didronel. (Someone needs to tell Sally Fields!) According to the FDA, "the pain and problems associated with these drugs can occur within days, months, or even years after starting biophosphonates.
Strong, Healthy Bones; Naturally* If you have or suspect osteoporosis, you need a skeleton and joint protocol that will truly rebuild strong bones. In addition, you need to start weight bearing exercise, stop using antacids (you need stomach acid to absorb calcium), you need to incorporate healthy fats such as EPA/DHA in your diet, and enjoy a little dose of daily sunshine for your vitamin D needs. The following Standard Process products are choices I offer many of my patients. Calcifood, Calcium Lactate, Cal-Ma Plus, Cataplex C, and if you have pain, Glucosamine Synergy.
