Even a Little Sugar Will Keep You Fat!

By: Dr Carolyn Berghuis, MS, ND, CTN
Wellness Director: Joy of Raphael

Did you know that even a little bit of sugar in your diet can inhibit your body from burning and reducing excess fat?  That's right, even sugar in moderation can paralyze the best weight loss program and severely limit the amount of body fat that can be reduced.  More bad news, sugar will additionally block the fat-burning effects of exercise.

How you ask?

When you ingest refined carbohydrates and/or sugar a signal is sent to your pancreas that tells this endocrine gland to create and release insulin.  Your insulin in turn guides the glucose (sugar in your blood) into your cells for energy.  This is what happens during exercise if sugar is present; sugar is used for fuel and not body fat!  Actually, when insulin is present you cannot burn body fat as fuel.  The burning of body fat for fuel requires the hormone glucagon and glucagon will only be present when insulin is active. While insulin is the principal hormone triggered by refined carbohydrates and sugar, it is also the key fat storage hormone!  As a matter of fact, all of your fat burning hormones (thyroid hormones, glucagons, human growth hormone, testosterone and adrenaline) are nullified and blocked in the presence of any insulin.

Asian Ear Candling: How Does it Work?

Ear candling

Asian ear candling is a specialized treatment for the ear and all its tiny parts.  Ear candling originated in ancient civilizations of Atlantis, Lemuria, Mu, India, China, Tibet, Egypt, and Native American cultures thousands of years ago. All of these cultures used ear candling as a means of healing and spiritual purification.

Though its origins are quite complex, the art of it is not.  Candling is an easy and painless treatment that removes inner ear build up that may cause infection, difficulty with hearing, or troubles with balance.  The candles used are non-drip and are shaped like a long wide pencil.

Before candling an ear, the therapist must first check the ear using a small ear-sized magnifying scope with a light.  This will give the therapist more of an idea of what she's dealing with.  If the ear drum is in any way damaged, candling shouldn't be done until it's completely healed.

To begin candling, the therapist has the client comfortably lay down on his or her side with their head propped on a soft pillow.  The therapist then covers the client's hair and shoulder with a flame retardant cloth.  Next, using a paper plate, the therapist places the coned end of the candle into the plate.  Once the candle is lit, the therapist places the candle snuggly in the ear canal until there is no smoke leaking from the outer ear.

The candle stays in the ear, the wick occasionally trimmed, until the candle is about three inches tall.  While the candle is burning, the therapist gently massages the clients face in a 'Z' like pattern.  Many clients find this massage to be extremely relaxing; often drifting off to sleep.  When the candle has reached its end, the therapist slowly removes the plate and candle, cutting the remainder of the burnt candle and opening up what is left to see how much was removed from the ear.  This is done twice in both ears.

It's best to receive candling every 4-6 weeks if the client isn't having troubles with their ears. If they are having problems, it's best to receive at each seasonal change to prevent added irritation.
