Cholesterol: How Low is Too Low?
By Carolyn Berghuis, M.S., N.D.
Low cholesterol, especially in older individuals correlates with an increased risk of death. People suffering from diseases like AIDS, chronic fatigue, and cancer often have very low cholesterol readings. It is now indisputable that for those people approaching 75 years or older, low cholesterol can be a very, very bad finding. Yet, many health care professionals still continue to lower their patients cholesterol with drugs.
Cholesterol is essential for life. From cholesterol your body makes your stress and sex hormones. Not enough cholesterol equates to not enough raw material to create the needed hormones. Then what do you suppose happens when your body can't make the stress hormones it needs or the sex hormones it needs? Hormone deficiency often results. Symptoms might include hot flashes (women), lack of stress handling capabilities, low libido, fatige, muscle weakness, lack of zest for life, or a low functioning immune system - just to mention a few. Further, you can't have healthy bones with out cholesterol transformed to vitamin D in your skin by the sun.
Cholesterol Drugs Actually Lower CoQ10 Production; an Essential Nutrient for the Heart
Statin drugs, have become more potent and are being prescribed in higher doses to increasing numbers of people--even those with "normal" cholesterol levels. What is often overlooked by physicians is that patients taking statins become depleted in Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which leads to fatigue, muscle weakness, soreness and heart failure.
Functions of Cholesterol
1. Important component of cell membranes.
2. A raw material the body uses to "patch" damages tissues in the arteries. Note: If cholesterol is the real problem, then why does it only accumulate in the arteries and not the veins?
3. Found in large amounts in brain tissue.
4. In older individuals the cholesterol in eggs has been shown to improve memory.
5. Cholesterol is vital for proper nerve function.
6. Infants need plenty of cholesterol for brain health and it is found in large quantities in breast milk.
7. Cholesterol is needed in large amounts in the skin - this makes us water repellant.
8. Your body makes most of the cholesterol needed in a day.
9. It is impossible to eat enough cholesterol-containing foods to supply our daily needs; therefore the practice of avoiding high cholesterol foods is not an effective way to control serum cholesterol levels.
10. Cholesterol is found only in animal tissues where it is a component of membranes; not in the fat of the meat, in the lean of the meat.
11. Only about 50% of the cholesterol in food is absorbed.
Healthy Cholesterol Protocal*
Keep your cholesterol at a healthy level. This varies from individual to individual. I often see healthy ranges between 150-250. Important heart health markers to look at include proper homocysteine levels, and a healthy LDL and HDL ratio, triglyceride levels, and proper blood sugar handling capabilities.
Lifestyle:
Mediterranean type diet.
Avoid trans-fats.
Correct insulin problems.
Maintain healthy functioning.
Supplements:
Omega Fatty Acids (EPA/DHA) be careful, many on the market are rancid and can be dangerous to your health.
Garlic
Vitamin B's
Proper anti-oxidants
Fiber; soluble and insoluble
CoQ10
Magnesium
Zinc *The above material is for information purposes only and is not meant to diagnose or treat any disease. Please seek the advice of your medical doctor with any health related concerns.
As always, follow the advice of a trusted health care professional and don't self diagnose. It's your life and you deserve to live it to the fullest! | |
