August 2011

Newsletter Header

Greetings, friends,

I often take time off in August to escape the Florida heat and humidity.  This year I chose to go to Westcliffe, Colorado where I attended the Wet Mountain Valley Writers' Workshop.  This six-day intensive workshop, located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, featured two well-respected and talented instructors -- Dorothy Allison and Abigail Thomas.  I studied memoir writing with Abigail and I learned so much.  My writing group was small and intimate, the meals were delicious, and the scenery was beyond spectacular.  This creative, educational experience exceeded my expectations.  Who knows...maybe one day I'll announce that I am writing a memoir!

Speaking of writing, my new book, POISED FOR SUCCESS, is coming along nicely.  I'm in the midst of editing my manuscript one final time before it goes to print.  Stay tuned because in the coming weeks I will be giving away several Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) to some of my Facebook fans.  To enter this giveaway, all you have to do is "like" my Facebook fan page.

POISED FOR SUCCESS will be published on November 8 but you don't have to wait until then to purchase your copy.  You can pre-order your book right now.  And if you do, I will send you an autographed bookplate as a token of my appreciation.  Just email me and include in the subject line, "Bought your book."  POISED FOR SUCCESS will also be available in Kindle and Nook versions, too.

Until next time, stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer!

To your success,

Coworkers: The Biggest Work Jerks

man yelling on the phone(Women's Health) In the petri dish of personalities we call the workplace, annoying coworkers are as inevitable as jammed printers, customer complaints, and paltry paychecks.  In fact obnoxious colleagues rank as one of the biggest sources of office stress -- just behind the fear of being fired or laid off, according to a recent Harris Interactive survey of nearly a thousand employees.  Use these strategies to cope with four of the most irritating associates.  Read more.

10 Emails That Could Get You Canned

businesswoman getting fired(Aol Jobs) For better or for worse, email is increasingly the way many people communicate in this technological era.

About 62 percent of employed adults use email or the Internet at work, a recent Pew Internet & American Life Project study found, and many also have mobile devices that help keep them connected even when they aren't at work.

All that connectivity allows users to speed communication instantly across thousands of miles. But failure to use the technology wisely can result in recipients being offended and the sender's judgment called into question.

More seriously, failure to heed some basic rules of email etiquette can result in workers being fired from their jobs.  Read more.

Inspiring Video of the Month

This beautiful video demonstrates how words can motivate, persuade, and tug at our heart strings.  I also think it has a deeper meaning: "Do what you can for those who can't." If we all kept that in mind, the world would a kinder, gentler place to live.
