| POSTAL EMPLOYEE CHARGED WITH WORKERS' COMPENSATION FRAUD
Empire State News 08/14/07
The US Attorney in Syracuse, New York announced that a US Postal employee; David VanDuesen pled guilty to fraud in his federal workers compensation claim.
Van Duesen will face federal prison time of up to five years, will have to pay a fine of $250,000 and will also have to pay back to the USPS more than $392,000 in federal benefits paid to him by the Office of Workers' Compensation Program (OWCP) since 1988.
VanDuesen had previously filed an OWCP claim for his on the job injury with USPS. As he received compensation benefits for his injury the federal government submitted periodic forms to him to complete and return. Those forms, commonly called a CA-1032 request information as to any other employment or wages Van Duesen had incurred while he was off work from the USPS and receiving federal benefits. VanDuesen apparently returned the routine forms stating he was not working. However he was actually operating three different personal businesses in Syracuse. Upon receipt of the forms by the OWCP the discrepancy was discovered and a federal investigation was started.
Van Duesen is scheduled for sentencing in December 2007.

FAA EMPLOYEE SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR FEDERAL FORM FRAUD
South Jersey News 08/24/2007
Jeffrey Bell, a technician with the FAA was sentenced to one year in federal prison, ordered by the federal court in New Jersey to pay a fine of $10,000 and further ordered to return $100,000 in federal workers' compensation benefits.
Bell had previously filed a claim for federal workers' compensation benefits which was approved by the Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP) in 2001. He then received federal compensation benefits while he was off work due to his injuries.
During that time the OWCP routinely sent him CA-1032 forms to complete and return in which he was asked to identify any employment he had or wages he earned outside his federal job. Bell returned the forms to OWCP stating he had no income and no other employment.
In reality Bell was operating a personal business of his own in which he received income during the times he was receiving OWCP benefits.
The inconsistency between his answers on the CA-1032 forms and an undercover investigation by the US government of his business affairs, credit card transactions and his wife's personal bank accounts ultimately exposed his fraud.

On July 16, 2007 the US Attorney in Phoenix obtained an indictment against Harold Pease for SSA fraud.
Pease allegedly received over $178,000 in SSA disability benefits based on his alleged inability to work. However, his photo appeared in a recent newspaper story showing how he charged $150 to remove bees from houses. Investigation by the SSA showed that his income as a bee keeper was greater than he was permitted while receiving SSA disability benefits.
Pease now faces up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
