Last month my friend Teresa posted this photo on Facebook. Her dad wrote this for her when she was two. I asked her about it and she wrote, "I actually didn't know about the poem until I was older, probably my mid-20s. My dad is not one to talk about feelings, so it was my mother who mentioned that he had written one for us kids when we were young. She typed it and framed it to send to me; how she kept track of them all these years I will never know. I really feel that he captured my adventurous spirit and desire to grow through life (at age 2)! I have always believed that I can learn something from everyone I meet or every situation I find myself in."

I also have a letter framed in my home that my dad wrote me on my 33rd birthday. He had a birthday tradition of giving us newly minted dollar bills and with it wrote a note. I am sure when he wrote it he never imagined it would be something I cherish, even framing it. I also have some student notes framed on my office walls. One was a poem presented to me (and written by) one of my college classes back in 2004, which includes the lines, "And understanding when our homework was late, even for the 'stink eye' this action would create." (I teach my students, by example, what a "stink eye" is. ☺)

My point? Sometimes it really is the little things that we do that makes a big impact on another person. Whether it is a moment or a note, it turns into something we cherish and brings us long-term happiness. How about spending some time this month creating lifelong memories for someone?

Keep smiling. ☺

The proportion of registered nurses in Texas who are male rose from 8.4% to 10.5% between 2000 and 2010, a sign that men are encroaching on female-dominated occupations in the U.S., according to The New York Times. Jobs such as nursing and teaching offer financial stability and good quality of life, and now that gender stereotypes are eroding, men are more willing to enter what used to be known as "pink-collar" jobs.

Regular participation in clubs and other social activities increases happiness to the same degree as doubling one's income or obtaining a college degree, according to Harvard's Robert D. Putnam, as reported by Chris M. Herbst of Arizona State. Evidence indicates that social connectedness has a powerful influence not only on happiness but also on self-reported health, Herbst says.

HAPPINESS FACTS

- Family Health Guide -

Although genes and upbringing influence about 50% of the variation in our personal happiness, our circumstances (income and environment) affect only about 10 percent. The remaining 40% is accounted for by our outlook and activities, including our relationships, friendships and jobs, our engagement in the community and our involvement in sports and hobbies.

 Dance July 12

The late pioneering social psychologist Professor Michael Argyle, who conducted many happiness studies, showed that among the things that made people happy are sport, music and - most of all dancing. Encouraging sports facilities everywhere would greatly increase a nation's happiness. Group dancing which, which combines, exercise, music, community, touch and rules, also drastically increases happiness.

4 Ways to Make a BIG Difference in Patient Care
- Nurse Together -
1. Help me feel human.I have been poked, prodded, tested and scanned. I don't feel special, unique or important. I feel like a number, a product, a 'case.' Make me feel more human by using my name, looking in my eyes, taking my hand and not talking about me, but by talking to me.

2. Empower me. I am used to being in control. I am a spouse, a parent, a community leader. People count on me. I am not used to feeling too vulnerable and out of control. So many people seem to be in control of what's going on with my illness, I feel helpless. You can allow me to be an active player in this game that I have been forced to play. Let me make small choices and be a part of important decisions. Even though I may not understand the terminology, I have the brains to contribute to my care plan. Communicate my choices to me and let me be involved.

3. Ease my fear.I am sick and petrified.I do not know what lies ahead. My job, my finances, my family, everything is hanging. My fright shows up as anger to you, but please don't take it personally. I have so much going on, so many fears, questions and burdens. You are seeing me at my worst, and this is not the me I am used to, but still your calm voice and your composed presence can help me ease my fears.

4. Treat me with respect. Ask me before you call me by my first name please.Honour my family, too, as they are an extension of me and they are hurting also. I know you have seen this and done this a thousand times, but I have not. Preserve my dignity and self-respect; be polite, explain until I understand and let patience reign.
