 JugglerGREETINGS FROM JEAN STEEL...

One of my 2011 Resolutions is to build a better work nest. Meaning those on my support team. I have worked with some whom... let's say didn't turn out exactly what I was hoping for. I know I am not a great business person, I trust from the get-go, love most people and as a result have gotten burned a few times.

So this is my new criteria. Each member of my support team must:     Keep smiling,

  • Have Integrity
  • Listen And Communicate Well
  • Have Passion For What They Do
  • Are Skilled At What They Do

It might seem like a no-brainer, but I have allowed people who have three of these into my life and realized without all four components it isn't going to work. The result is reduced stress (way)and more fun.

3 Tips for Surviving
Difficult Conversations

No one is immune to workplace tensions: It is inevitable that you will have some trying conversations with colleagues or clients. Here are three ways to reach a productive outcome, no matter how tough things get:

1. Keep it civil. Don't turn the conversation into a combat with a winner and a loser. Everyone looks bad when the discussion turns toxic.

2. Don't rehearse.

When you know things are going to be tough, it's tempting to practice what you're going to say ahead of time. But this is a conversation - not a performance. Instead, know where you stand but be open enough to listen and react.

3. Resist making assumptions.

You don't have access to anyone's intentions but your own. Don't assume that you know where your counterpart is coming from or how she views the problem. Instead, ask for her perspective.

This is Your Brain

The brain is pretty fascinating. Here are a few facts:

  • Think positive because when you do, you'll keep the doctor away: Studies show that 50-70% of visits to the doctor for physical ailments can be traced to psychological reasons.
  • Eat well, and it'll have positive effects on your brain, because a study of one million New York students showed that those who ate lunches without additives such as artificial flavors, preservatives and dyes performed 14% better in IQ tests.

    Random Acts of Kindness

    - An Illustrated Celebration -

A friend who was working in the Dominican Republic with Habitat for Humanity had befriended a small boy named Etin. He noticed that when Etin wore a shirt it was always the same dirty, tattered one. A box of used clothes has been left at the camp, and my friend found two shirts in it that were in reasonably good shape and about Etin's size, so he gave them to the grateful boy. A few days later he saw another boy wearing one of the shirts. When he next met up with Etin he explained that they shirts were meant for him. Etin just looked at him and said, But you gave me two!"

    Power of Play

You never have to tell a little kid to go out and play - we're born with an instinct for fun. Now a growing body of research suggests that we grown-ups would all do ourselves good by connecting with our inner child. Nothing evaporates stress and lowers blood pressure like a bout of silliness (pillow fight, anyone?), but that's just part of it. Cultivating a playful attitude actually makes you more creative and strengthens relationships. (wouldn't you rather spend time with people who make you laugh?). So find ways to build more joyful abandon into your days. It may not be good for your mattress springs but it's definitely great for your health.

    Just Breathe

    - from Health -

With nursing you are on the go, generally from the moment your shift starts to the time you get out the door. One of the best techniques for reducing stress you have with you at all times. Your breath.

Try this relaxation exercise from breathing guru Andrew Weil, MD, best-selling author and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Arizona. The payoff? "Blessed relief" from constant thinking, Weil says.

    • Sit with your back straight.
    • Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge just behind your front teeth.
    • Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
    • Inhale quietly through your nose with your mouth closed to a mental count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
    • Exhale completely through your mouth, this time whooshing to a count of eight.
    • Inhale again and repeat the exercise three times for a total of four breaths.
